Grant Wiggins is the protagonist and narrator of A Lesson Before Dying. Grant is a elementary school teacher and he is in his mid- twenties. Grant made an escape from his racist community by going of to college. Despite Grant’s education and growth, white people still treats him like he is unhuman. Grant learned a new and educated way of thinking and speaking when he attended school. Grant is intelligent, forward, depressed and hypocritical. The racism in the community forced Grant to lose faith in himself, his church, and the society. Over the course of the novel Grant changes drastically.
Grants perspective changes throughout the novel because of his visits with Jefferson and his relationship with Vivian. Jefferson is a very close friend
