Graphic Design
The term graphic design can be dated back to 1922 or before. William Addison Dwiggins started this term and in the 1950’s Yale started a Graphic Design program but it wasn’t until 1993 when the, profession was perfected by a Paul Rand (printmag). Rand is known for pioneering advertising and branding (fastcodesign). Dwiggins’ referred to himself as a graphic designer in-order to set himself apart from the rest of those doing advertising, printing and typographic arts (hellerbooks).
The history of print dates back to the 1800’s where they started penny prints. A penny print is a single print that was for something unusual event or an important one. As time goes on the print world evolves and the print presses are being made. The first iron framed print press was made by Charles Stanhope in 1800. The Industrial Revolution brought about a lot of changes in the print world. The Lithographic Rotary press was invented in 1843 by Richard Hoe and it was the most important printing process developed during the Industrial Revolution (prepressure).
As the years continue to pass the printing world continues to grow. Typewriters are invented and so are computers. These inventions allow one to do computer typesetting (Britannica). The desktop publishing was one of the most significant changes during the Industrial revolution. Since the desktop publishing there has been countless books made that we enjoy when we read. The newspapers are more than a few pages today because of desktop publishing and everyone can get one.
As with everything there are going to be some challenges. The technological challenges that we face today, as graphic designers would be staying educated on the new software because the more you know the more you can earn. I must stay competitive in my career if I am to advance in it because there are millions of graphic designers that are already established.
