Right-click the "My Computer" icon on the desktop. If you have Windows Vista, the icon is named "Computer." Select "Manage" from the list of menu items. This opens a window that has a list of system options.
Step Two
Click the "Storage" icon in the main management console. Clicking this icon expands the list of options and displays the disk management option. Click the icon. It may take a few seconds before the list of drives display in the main menu. Once the drives display, you are shown a list of partitions along with any unused disk space. The disk management tool in Windows also displays optical drives like CD-ROM and DVD drives, but these cannot be expanded.
Step Three
Right-click the partition you want to expand. This can be the C drive or another hard drive partition on your computer. From the menu items, select "Extend Volume." A new window is shown where you enter the new size for the disk partition. Click "Next" at the opening window.
Step Four
Select the unused disk space in the opening dialog window. This unused space is used to add disk space to the partition in the disk management tool. The unused disk space can be on the current drive or a new drive you've recently installed into the machine. Enter the size for the new disk partition. By default, the disk management tool enters the total amount of disk space that is unused, so you can just click the "Next" button to add all the available disk space.
Step Five
Click the "Finish" button to confirm the changes you make to the hard drive. The unused hard drive space is added to the partition in the disk management tool. You can now use it to store your data information.
The disk management tool can be used to allocate space throughout the different hard drives on your computer. The one thing it can't do is shrink the size of the partition.
