Graveyard Night Shift
Disadvantages to Working the Night Shift
By Sid Williams III, eHow Contributor updated: March 11, 2010 1. As many companies operate 24 hours per day, there are jobs that require night or graveyard shift employees. Although it is true that working in night shifts has advantages--higher pay and less supervision--it also has several disadvantages.
Health Concerns 2. Working the night shift poses health concerns primarily because the brain is programmed to sleep at night. Since the sleeping pattern is disturbed or totally altered, the body feels tired. These adjustments undertaken by the body can also cause stress. More importantly, graveyard shifts can cause irregular heartbeats and even heart attacks since people's susceptibility to heart diseases and heart attacks are vastly increased because of the increase in stress.
Diverted Life 3. Although working the night shift is fairly prevalent for some, most people don't work during the night. More often than not, people who work on night shifts alter their normal activities and their time with family and friends because they sleep in the morning and work in the evening.
Career Stall 4. While some may consider less supervision during the night shift an advantage, it can also be a factor for a less competitive working atmosphere. It is possible that night-shift employees will not be as competitive as those who work daytime shifts. In addition, less supervision means less visibility from administrators; therefore, the chances of having the benefit of thorough performance evaluation, as well as career promotion, might be stalled. Lack of a competitive environment may also affect the employee's professional work ethic and may result in career stagnation instead of development.
Coworkers
5. Many night-shift jobs don't include the luxury of coworkers. Because the majority of these jobs are normally quiet and secluded, the added stress of not working with others can be a detriment.

As you know, on Mondays my shift at the MVASC is 11:00 - 4:00, and Amy R’s is 4:00 - 8:00. At the moment I wouldn’t have a problem with switching over to evening/night hours on Monday. Either way is fine by me. I know that Amy R has some trouble with her eyes and driving at night, and that is why I brought this up.…

Teens that do not get enough sleep are much more likely to participate in violent crimes as well as property crimes than teens with good amounts of sleep. Also, when teens get insufficient sleep, they are more likely to smoke, become alcoholics, do drugs, and get into fights at school, which has caused many students to become criminals in the future. If you do not get enough sleep each night, you could suffer from drowsy driving, which is extremely dangerous, and could lead to many deaths due to car crashes. In Wyoming, when Jackson Hole High School shifted its start time almost to 9:00 a.m., the car crashes involving teenage drivers dropped by an astonishing 70%. Later school times allow you to get the sleep that you need to make good decisions, not only for you, but also for…

Hello Monique, great contribution to this delicate topic in discussion. It must have been very difficult for you to argue for a topic that you personally oppose. From your personal point of view, I truly agree with all your argument about the negative consequences for nurses working 12 hour shifts. On the other hand the article you posted in favor of 12 hour shift did not do a good job supporting its arguments with other evidence based facts. I was also a little confused about the scenario you shared and its correlation to working extended long hours. I will be glad if you can enlighten me further on that correlation. I am currently working on an inpatient psychiatric unit and I will testify that working only 32 hours a week for 4 days even…

If a person is seen getting robbed, beaten, or stabbed in broad daylight, then the police will surely get called. Now on the flip side if a person is robbed, beaten, or stabbed in the middle of the night, then people are not going to know about it right away. Daylight saving time comes into the equation because it is light for longer hours in a day. As noted by Source C, “The DOT [Department of Transportation] study found that violent crime…was reduced by 10 to 13 percent during periods of daylight saving time.” Criminals fear committing crimes in broad daylight for various reasons like getting caught or getting identified. People often tend to feel better in daylight versus nighttime because who honestly wants to go down a dark alley in the middle of the night. Because of these…

It is that it decreases our productivity when DST starts. Whether it is we sleep in too much and become lazy or we wake up tired having a tough time staying awake. According to LiveScience, with most that work the morning of a daylight savings time often experience cyber-loafing. Which is basically procrastinating on the internet during times of work (Poppick, Laura). This relates back to loss of money during the second point because if one isn’t working then they usually are not making money. Per globalnews.ca, this happens due to the lack of sleep which causing the employees to have a lack of motivation.
