Randy tells Ponyboy, “You get a little money an the whole world hates you. (Hinton 117) Some Socs feel like they are judged based off of the actions of others an not individually. Still, they are way more fortunate than the greasers and fail to appreciate what they have. Also, Cherry Valance tells Ponyboy, “ Things are rough all over.” This shows that the Socs believe that they have their own set of problems that the greasers have no idea about. Nevertheless, they do nothing to try and make themselves seem like decent people. The greasers struggle more than the Socs because the greasers are not wealthy like them and they have little, if…
For people that have never had to struggle for a buck, they could never imagine life in the streets. I grew up primarily getting everything I wanted, and obviously everything I needed. Never did I ever once have to ride a city bus, let alone be found anywhere near inner city streets. I use to believe that the people there were "bad," therefore they placed themselves in the street. But after going to school with kids in poverty, and somewhat seeing the streets, I realized that this life is sometimes unavoidable.…
“No one ever said that you could work hard—harder even than you ever thought possible—and still find yourself sinking even deeper into poverty and debt.” This is a quote by Barbara Ehrenreich who wrote “Nickel and Dimed,” she is a journalist with a PHD in biology and writes about her own story as she chooses to change her entire lifestyle, face the hardships of being a part of the working poor class just to see if she can survive. Throughout the book she illustrated the different jobs she endured and the struggles that came along with the jobs. Her story highlights the social inequality she experienced based on her status, working poor class, routine lifestyle, her experience living on the edge and the stagnant pay she received. There was a lot of social inequality in her journey that many Americans seem to overlook on the poor working class.…
The Greasers Things are rough all over (The Outsiders). Based on what I read, The Greasers struggle more due to the lack of support from their parents. According to the book The Outsiders, by S.E. Hinton, The Greasers had more trouble than the Socs because of the sacrifices they made and the violence they were exposed to. The Socs have the wealth to have a good life but decide to make poor choices...while the Greasers make significant sacrifices. Because of the sacrifices they made and the violence they were exposed to, the “Greasers” struggled more than the “Socs”.…
When Cherry Valance, said things are rough all over, she meant that the Soc’s weren’t just what was displayed to them on the outside, and during the fights, they are also people that have lives, and families, and friends. When Cherry and Marcia are at the movies, the Greasers show up, and Ponyboy engages in a conversation with Cherry and she says that, “We have troubles you've never even heard of”(Hinton 34)Cherry Valance says this, because the Socs aren’t just the “rich kids, the West-side Socs”(34), they are real people with real problems. Another quote that readers may see is found towards the ending of the book, when the Socs pull up to the gas station that Ponyboy and Two-Bit are at. Randy says that, “(116). He kept trying to make someone…
In The Outsiders the Greasers have less money than the Socs, so they are poor. Johnny kills the Soc, and Johnny, and Ponyboy have to change their identity so that they don’t fit the descriptions. Also in this novel a member from each group changes one changing in a good way, and the other changing in a bad way. S.E Hinton meant to show that everyone is going through something no matter how good their life seems. During S.E Hinton’s The Outsiders the theme “it’s rough all over” is shown by tragic events and struggles throughout the story. Losing someone who means alot to you, not having a lot of money, and changing your lifestyle for sure proves that everyone is or has gone through a hard time, If you don’t go through something then you're not…
In the book The Outsiders by S.E. hinton it is about the 1960’s in Tulsa, Oklahoma there were two groups the Socs and the Greasers. The Greasers were the poor one’s who lived in small houses. The socs were the rich ones who lived in the big houses and drove the nice cars. The hated the Greasers and made fun of them because they thought they were all horrible people.…
Can two drastically different groups of kids face similar problems? In the novel The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton two classes of kids, greasers and socs, share many similar problems. Greasers come from rough neighborhoods and create gangs to have a sense of belonging, socs live in wealthy neighborhoods and gang up on greasers. Although, both groups are so different they have many similar problems such as fitting in, developing romantic relationships, and getting approval from parents.…
Frequently the Greasers get shunned from society, making outcasts out of people who fit in with an unlikely group. “Greasers can’t walk alone too much…
Do you ugly think being a Social is cool? I think that being a Social or "Sos" is way better than being a Greaser. First Socs have nice clothing. I would much rather wear nice, named-brand clothing than ripped jean jackets that are dirty. Also Socs have a lot of money. Money gets you cool belonging.…
In conclusion, the greasers will always be poor with not much money and will always have to live in their unsafe environment. Just like most people, the greasers will most likely always struggle because they have such little amounts of money . Most people who…
As previously mentioned, variables for consideration in this study are poverty, racial tension and lack of opportunity. To begin, the Hallway Hangers have eight members – one who is Black, one who is bi-racial, and six of Italian or Irish heritage (p. 25). Characteristics of this group are their long history at Clarendon Heights, as most of them belong to families who have occupied the housing project for several years. They abuse drugs, participate in crime, are self-proclaimed alcoholics, exhibit overt racism, and five of them are high school dropouts. They claim that their “bad” behavior is a badge of honor, display a strong sense of loyalty to each other and lack parental involvement. The Hallway Hangers also present a pessimistic outlook on life, that is to say, they express they wish to make it out of Clarendon Heights someday yet all of them envision bleak futures for themselves (pp. 25-45). On the contrary, the Brothers are a group of predominately young Black men who are heavily influenced by their mothers. They are considered recent tenants of Clarendon Heights, which serves as a point of contention between the two peer groups. The Brothers do not habitually abuse drugs or alcohol, they stay clear of crime, and regularly attend high…
The Greasers are very poor in the book. “ We’re poorer than The Socs and middle class,” (Hinton pg. 3). The Socs have lots of money to just blow. The Greasers are really poor, but they’re…
Do you ever feel like you’re being forced to do things because of the expectations society has placed on you to do them? For instance shaving your legs just because you are a female. Societal expectations and expectations placed on the characters in the novel “The Outsiders” by themselves greatly affected their actions and reactions, as well as the final outcome of the novel. One example of the role societal expectations play in the novel is that all the members of the Greaser gang have only each other for true friendship because society has made it so they cannot rely on anyone else because of how they appear to everyone else (rough and greasy) and are also looked down upon because of this. Another example is when Cherry tells Ponyboy not to take it personally if she doesn’t talk to him at school because they come from contrasting social groups. Lastly, Darry stays with his brothers instead of going to college because of the pressure on him by himself and society to be there for his family after his parents die. Ultimately, personal and societal expectations played a large role among the characters in…
In the novel "The Outsiders" by S.E.Hinton its about three brothers who live with each other Darry, Sodapop and Ponyboy with no parents because their parents passed away in an auto wreck.
