T.C Boyle is and will continue to be a respected name in the world of literature. His short stories especially deserve special mention. The title story of his ‘Greasy Lake’ collection is one of the better-known short stories. It has been studied in schools and colleges, and there are numerous academic resources analyzing it. Literary critics have called the story inspiration and eye opening, and they are accolades well deserved. In this paper, the writer shall only offer a summary of the story. There will not be an analysis or a look at the themes or salient points.
Setting
The narrator of the story and his friends Digby and Jeff head out for a night of ‘being bad’. Digby is attending Cornell University so he must be pretty smart. On the other hand, Jeff is planning to drop out of school. He wants to be a painter or go into music. He evens talks about starting his own head shop. The narrator is careful and clear to mention that the car is a blue ’57 Chevy, and it is in mint condition. It was the typical greaser car. The boys think that the Chevy belongs to their friend and park behind him and approach the car. As they are going towards the Chevy, the narrator loses his keys. It is an ominous sign. When the three get to the car, they find that it is not their friend. The greaser in the Chevy leaves his girl in the car and attacks the three boys.
