Great Dictator
The Great Dictator's Speech I know most of you might expect me to talk about a speech by Abraham Lincoln or Winston Churchill!, but today I thought I would talk to you about a speech that really inspired me! a speech by Charlie Chaplin. In his first speaking role, Charlie Chaplin makes one of the most moving and thought-provoking speeches in history. The Great Dictator, a movie written, produced, directed, and starring Charlie Chaplin, premiered on October 15, 1940, while the United States was still promoting appeasement with Nazi Germany. The film was originally meant to ridicule Adolph Hitler and condemn the Nazi party and it’s values. The plot circles around two characters, both played by Chaplin. One is a dictator and the other is an amnesic Jewish barber who is the doppelganger of the dictator.
The crux of the film is when the barber is given the opportunity to speak to the people of the two warring countries as the dictator. let me start off by reading to you his speech
I’m sorry, but I don’t want to be an emperor. That’s not my business. I don’t want to rule or conquer anyone. I should like to help everyone - if possible - Jew, Gentile - black man - white. We all want to help one another. Human beings are like that. We want to live by each other’s happiness - not by each other’s misery. We don’t want to hate and despise one another. In this world there is room for everyone. And the good earth is rich and can provide for everyone. The way of life can be free and beautiful, but we have lost the way.
Greed has poisoned men’s souls, has barricaded the world with hate, has goose-stepped us into misery and bloodshed. We have developed speed, but we have shut ourselves in. Machinery that gives abundance has left us in want. Our knowledge has made us cynical. Our cleverness, hard and unkind. We think too much and feel too little. More than machinery we need humanity. More than cleverness we need kindness and gentleness. Without these qualities, life will

There is a subliminal tone throughout the chapter that humankind really can be what the title implies: kind. The content consistently punches on the habitual lives we live as being purely serving self-interest. However I perceive that this is antagonistically challenged by what I assume the central theme of this literature will be: we have something more to us than just serving our seemingly genetic propensity of self-interest. This something may perhaps befuddle the…

Born in 1769, Napoleon Bonaparte is one of the most famous people of French history. Being immersed in the military from the age of 9 and on, it is no wonder that he became one of, arguably, the best military leaders of all time. But, the question comes about, was Napoleon a hero or a tyrant? Along with the many good things that Napoleon did to help the people of France after the French Revolution, came some very, very bad things. In no time he went from being loved and adored by the people of France to being absolutely loathed. Some people argue that even with all the bad things that he did, Bonaparte was still a hero, but how can somebody who did so many terrible things still be a hero? Napoleon was a tyrant because of his belief in equality for only half of the…

Throughout history there have been many great and memorable speeches given by influential people. Presidents, for example, seem to be known and remembered for giving great speeches. One President that comes to my mind is former President Ronald Reagan. President Reagan gave many well-known and historically famous speeches throughout his political career. Ronald Reagan’s “A Time for Choosing,” is considered the speech that propelled his political career. The excerpt, “We Must Fight,” concluded the speech and inspired the audience to believe in fighting and not surrendering (Ronald).…

Ronald Reagan’s Address to the Nation on the Challenger is a great example of good public speaking. Reagan uses great language throughout the speech and puts people in a better mood about a very tragic event in American history. Throughout the speech he addresses the majority of the population and thanks people who were involved in helping the space shuttle reach space. His use of all these elements is why I personally love this speech and think it is a great speech for anyone to…

The idea of human nature has changed over time in many aspects, but throughout history and literature, self-interest has stayed as a foremost motivation in human actions, thoughts, and mannerisms. Needs to gain more power, more land, or more substance has caused people of all times and cultures to use forms of acquisition to quell these thirsts. Even at different times in history, this idea of selfish satisfaction proves true. As evidenced through literature in different time periods, authors show self-motivation through their characters.…
