Great Expectations Great Expectations is a comprehensive novel written by Charles Dickens that shows the spiritual and moral development of the main character, Pip. Pip is a young orphan child that lives with his sister, Mrs. Joe, and her husband, Joe and is best friends with a beautiful, smart girl named Biddy. He lives a happy childhood with his apprentice, Joe, until one day Uncle Pumplechook invites him to “play” at Miss Havisham’s house. Miss Havisham is a rich, victimized woman who wears her wedding dress from the day her fiancée abounded her at the alter. This is the beginning of Pip’s new adventure of life. Pip instantly falls in love with Estella even though she is very cruel to him. Estella is a beautiful young woman who lives at Miss Havisham’s mansion or better known as, The Satis House. Pip is given the chance to become a “gentleman” by a secret benefactor who will provide him money, but the identity must be kept a secret. He moves to London where a well known lawyer, Mr. Jaggers, will help him out in what he can. During his time in London, he is trained to be a gentleman by Mr. Pocket and forms a great friendship with his son, Herbert. Pip’s character starts changing because of his wealth and position. He soon starts to feel ashamed of Joe and Mrs. Joe due to their standing in the lower class so he starts to cut off communication with them. Pip believes if Estella knows he is associated with low class people, she won’t love him even she told him she can’t love him. Even though with her warnings, Pip keeps persist on loving her. On his 24th birthday, he is told who his real benefactor is. From the start, he always believed Miss Havisham was his benefactor, but in reality it was a convict Pip helped long ago on a Christmas day. As well, he realizes with shame that he has mistreated his good friend Joe, who was always faithful to him. Pip soon regrets all he has ever done to Joe and
