Great Gatsby Setting
In The Great Gatsby setting represents the characters personalities, all the main locations for example Valley of Ashes, West Egg, and East egg all describe the characters in some way. Gatsby lived in West Egg where all the very rich people and the new emergence of the new rich lived. Gatsby described West Egg because he was very rich, was young, had a ginormous home with glorious parties. Tom and Daisy Buchanan lived in East Egg “Across the courtesy bay by the white palaces of fashionable East Egg glittered along the water, and the history of the summer really begins” (5). East Egg is for all the high social class, wealthy, and the older upper class that dominated the society. This described the Buchanan’s because Daisy was always described …show more content…
For example when Gatsby and Daisy had tea together in West Egg after not seeing each other for 5 years it was thundering and raining, they were nervous and uncomfortable. But soon when they began talking and they began reminiscing about the past the sun came out and it turned into a beautiful day. This shows that the change in mood changes the weather and environment. Another example of setting impacting the theme is when the whole group went to the City and stayed in the Plaza. This day was the hottest day in the summer, this was because Gatsby and Tom were fighting, the heat shows the heated argument they were having about Daisy. It was very hot in East Egg, West Egg, New York, and The Valley of the Ashes until the day Gatsby died. ”At two o’clock Gatsby put on his bathing suit and left word with the butler that if anyone phoned word was to be brought to him at the pool” (161). Gatsby was going for a swim in his pool for the first time all summer before it closed for the fall. This was the day George killed him, it was still warm out but after his death the weather turned cold. This shows that Gatsby's and Tom’s argument wasn't over while the weather was still hot but as soon as Gatsby died the fight was over the cold weather came in and Tom had won the fight. This shows that the setting during The Great Gatsby greatly affected the theme in the

In chapter one of The Great Gatsby F. Scott Fitzgerald introduces the story using detailed imagery to create a mood for the book. The narrator, Nick Carraway, just moved to West Egg, Long Island, a neighborhood of up and coming young, wealthy people. While Nick himself isn’t over the top wealthy, he can afford a modest house next door to Gatsby’s mansion. Since he is in New York now, Carraway goes to visit his cousin Daisy and her husband Tom Buchanan at their posh home across the bay in East Egg. East Egg is a more conservative, old money neighborhood where people who have been inheriting their families money for years live. In The Great Gatsby, Fitzgerald creates a serene mood at the Buchanan household using vast specific details such as…

West Egg is where Nick recently moved to after living in Minnesota to go the Yale and fight in World War I. “I lived at West Egg, the—well, less fashionable of the two…” (Fitzgerald 4). Nick never seemed to care much about his situation of living. Even if East Egg is better he was still fine with living in West Egg. The entire story is told through the eyes of Nick with him being one of the protagonist in the book. Everyone loves coming to West Egg, but not Because of Nick, Because of Gatsby. East Egg being the “old rich” meaning families that come from money and West Egg being the “new rich” meaning families that are first generation wealthy. The contrast of the two areas contributes to the meaning of the work as a whole to show the difference in lifestyle within the upper class and specifically between Gatsby and the Buchanan family.…

In the 1920’s, when this novel takes place, many people were only focused on money. Women wanted to marry into families of men that had wealth that had been passed down for generations, otherwise known as “old money,” and deemed the men of “new money,” newly earned wealth, unworthy. However, they did not take into consideration that the men coming from a poor family that worked very hard to attain their wealth, may have been better suited for them, all because of where they were from, and their social status. In the novel “The Great Gatsby” Fitzgerald decided to make geography determine the social status of the characters. In the novel the characters living in east egg: Daisy Buchanan, Tom Buchanan, and Jordan Baker, come from families that’s wealth has been passed down for many generations, also known as “Old money.” On the other hand, Jay Gatsby and Nick Caraway live on West Egg, where the people of “new money” reside. This sets up the contrast between Daisy and Gatsby, showing that they could never be together because of their difference in social status. In the novel Fitzgerald makes it very clear that the people of West Egg do not associate with the people of East Egg because they are too different. After attending one of Gatsby’s many parties at his mansion in west egg, the narrator makes the comment that "[Daisy] was appalled by West Egg... by its raw vigor that chafed... and by the too obtrusive fate that herded its inhabitants along a short-cut from nothing to nothing. She saw something awful in the very simplicity she failed to understand." This shows that even though Gatsby now has the money that he lacked when they first loved each other, she can still never love him because he is “new money,” and she is “old money.” Daisy is disgusted by the party because it does not include the elite company that she is used to being around. The fact that wealth and social status have that much of an effect on a person definitely shows how corrupt this…

After reading, one will notice that Tom Buchanan has everything that the American Dream has to offer--a nice house, a family, and large amounts of money. "Their [Tom and wife, Daisy] house was even more elaborate than I expected, a cheerful red and white Georgian Colonial mansion overlooking the bay." (11). It's even seen through the surrounding colors that he has the American Dream--"red", "white", and the blue "bay". The community he lives in is East Egg, known for its richness, extravagance, and prominence. This shows that he is indeed rich, prominent, and extravagant. In contrast, Gatsby is quite opposite. Gatsby is in search for the American Dream.…

Gatsby’s wealth came from a desire to be rich, and this desire to be rich derived from his need for materialistic items and belongings. For example, Gatsby is known for having one of the most luxurious houses in his respected home town. This house represents more than just a fancy show for people to gawk at, it provides Gatsby with a sense of fulfillment and happiness. A new member of the Egg islands, named Nick Carraway, has moved next door to Jay Gatsby and describes his house as the following, “The one on my right was a colossal affair by any standard… with a tower on one side, spanking new under a thin beard of raw ivy, and marble swimming pool” (Fitzgerald 5). The owner of this house, Jay Gatsby, lives alone and only uses his house for…

In The Great Gatsby, a lot of the story revolves around Jay Gatsby’s house, which depicts an illusionary image throughout the novel. Nick describes the house during the party with a lot of life and color. Phrases like “In his blue gardens men and girls came and went like moths…” and “ ...already the halls and salons and verandas are gaudy with primary colors…” add to the dramatic and illusive notion of Gatsby and his dream. Fitzgerald’s purpose in this is to give the reader a better observation of who Gatsby is and how he plans to reach his dream. He hides within the facade of his parties, as well as his lies, and he’s stuck in the past. All of his extravagance is purely for one person to notice him, and his house helps that idea along very…
