Symbolic Objects People express themselves in many different ways, one way is taking pictures of nature to cope with grief and to express themselves. Like as with “photography is full of symbolism, it’s a symbolic language. You have to be able to materialize all your thoughts in one single image” (Sebastiao Salgado). People use symbolism everyday to help them describe situations. Especially those who are authors, like Fitzgerald in The Great Gatsby. An analysis of the novel shows great use of symbolism, in how he describes everything symbolically as he does with different colors and even the weather.

For example, when Gatsby goes to Nick’s house on “the day agreed upon” to meet Daisy for the first time it is “pouring” out (Fitzgerald 88). Gatsby wants to impress Daisy so he has one of his servants come over “to cut [Nick’s] grass” (Fitzgerald 88). Even Gatsby’s mannerisms before meeting Daisy gives the reader a melancholy tone. Where Gatsby “sat down miserably” and he is also “pale as death” (Fitzgerald 90-91). As the whole plan unfolds Gatsby starts doubting himself about asking Nick to have Daisy over for tea. The rain reflects his uncertainty. Once Daisy and Gatsby see one another and the anticipation settles it “stopped raining” (Fitzgerald 94). The sudden change in the weather symbolizes the change in the characters feelings. As the tension begins to rise, the weather changes to a “broiling” heat and the discomfort of the main characters also changes (Fitzgerald 120). Heat symbolizes the parallel acceleration of the conflict between Tom and Gatsby. The heat becomes stifling during the climactic scene in the novel when Tom, Daisy, Nick, Jordan and Gatsby head to town. Typically with hot weather, tempers rise and people become more short - fused.
