The Great Gatsby is a symbolic reflection on America in the 1920’s and more specifically, the ‘falling out of the American dream’ in an era of unprecedented wealth and material excess. Fitzgerald portrays the 1920s as an era of poor social and moral values, as Carraway experiences through his endeavours with Gatsby. The main theme surrounding the protagonist specifically, is Gatsby’s hope of rekindling his love with Daisy Buchanan. Gatsby’s mansion was across the lake from Daisy’s house. This distance and Gatsby’s Passionate love was symbolised by a Green light at the end of Daisy’s dock. Throughout the book Nick Carraway would state how “Gatsby believed in the Green Light”. This quote could show that the “Green Light” symbolises the goals that Gatsby wanted to achieve for instance, his love for Daisy and being so close to her gave him hope of achieving this goal. He wanted to show Daisy that he has evolved and made something of himself but his materialistic endeavours failed him in the end. Gatsby’s money-oriented façade ties in with the theme of materialism and demonstrates in the end that money cannot buy happiness, or in this case, love. Nick Carraway despises and is a non-believer of the American dream after the death of Gatsby.
The intended audience for this book would be anyone who is interested in old literature or
