The Great Gatsby; The Valley of Ashes

What is the valley of ashes and why is it called that? The valley of ashes is located between the Eggs and New York. The valley of ashes is first introduced to us in chapter two. If it already doesn’t sound horrible enough, it is also described as a dark place in the book. “This is a valet of ashes- a fantastic farm where ashes grow like wheat into ridges an hills and grotesque gardens, where ashes take the forms of houses and chimneys and rising smoke and finally, with a transcendent effort, of men who move dimly and already crumbling through the powdery air. Occasionally a line of grey cars crawls along an invisible track, gives out a ghastly creak and comes to rest…”, (chapter 2, page 27). I believe the valley isn’t literally what it is said to be but a

He based it off the time it was made and the type of people and lifestyles they all lived. Everyone in that time craved to live an extraordinary life filled with money. Since everyone was struggling to reach that goal, many spent their time in parties, drinking alcohol, (which at the time was illegal), just to keep their mind off the real world. Many of the relationships and marriages in the book were failures. Right from the beginning of the book, we are shown the uncertainty of wanting to be in a committed relationship. Not just the men but also the women are this way seeking attention, gifts, and things their spouse cannot provide. This is all relating to the themes of society, class, love and the vision of America. The married couples that are together make themselves seem perfect for a show, and attend events, parties, and “live the life” when in reality that is not what it is. Fitzgerald shows us this early in the book to emphasis the importance and how serious situations were in the book. He shows all of this greatly throughout the

If Jay Gatsby were to have a scrapbook there are many things he might include, but a main part of it might be Daisy. Throughout the book, we see his love from the origin story of Gatsby and Daisy’s relationship all the way to Gatsby taking the fall for hitting and killing Myrtle Wilson. This scrapbook page includes a variety of pictures and colors that show details of their relationship. I chose to do black and white photos in an attempt to preserve the time period. While the clothing might not be perfect and has a slightly modern touch, it is not explicitly 2017 fashion. Next, in the photos, I used an actual couple which provided me with photos that include physical intimacy. They also allowed me to show a relationship dynamic I might not…

Scott Fitzgerald, many characters are primarily thinking about themselves in relationships. Tom and Daisy, a seemingly lovely married couple are both having affairs behind each others back. Tom says “I suppose the latest thing is to sit back and let Mr. Nobody from Nowhere make love to your wife. Well, if that's the idea you can count me out” in reference to Daisy’s affair with Jay Gatsby even though Tom has no problem with flaunting his affair in public “the fact that he had one [a mistress] was insisted upon wherever he was known. His acquaintances resented the fact that he turned up in popular restaurants with her and, leaving her at a table, sauntered about, chatting with whomever he knew.” Tom was rubbing the fact he had a mistress in and after expressing his distaste for the idea of his wife having an affair, it is very hypocritical. Tom is selfish if he thinks he is the only one who is entitled to be unfaithful and it's hypocritical of him to think he is allowed to be unfaithful to his wife while she is still only with him. It's understandable that because of the time period this book is set (1920’s) there were social standards to uphold and that it might not have been possible for Tom and Daisy to leave their marriage but it doesn’t change the fact that they were both making choices about their relationship that were…

I believe that Fitzgerald constructs characters such as: Myrtle Wilson, Daisy Buchanan and Jordan Baker which manipulates the reader to perceive these women as sinful, lustful and provocative. However, Fitzgerald may have done this due to the radiant times of the ‘Jazz Age’ (Roaring Twenties). Although, throughout the novel the reader is able to notice that everyone is superficial and pretentious snobs due to the power of money. Furthermore, there is a clear obsession with materialism and the perception of your class as seen right the way through ‘The Great Gatsby’.…

The location of the Valley of Ashes shows the waste that comes from the American lifestyle and the death of the American Dream. When traveling from East and West Egg to New York City, the characters journey through the gloomy place of the Valley of Ashes, “an area swampland that is being filled with refuse”(Baker). The Valley of Ashes is a dark, dirty place between the sparkling East and West Eggs. The valley symbolizes darkness and death: the horror that comes after the expensiveness of the American Dream. The valley is full of the waste from the Eggs, showing how the glitz and glamour of the American Dream will lead to dark times, and for some, even death. A main character that lives in the Valley of Ashes is George Wilson, “a defeated man” who has “seen his version of the American Dream become like heaps that encroach on…
