Before heading to Rottnest, we took part in a numerous amount go safety practices, ensuring and preparing us for our day trip to Rottnest. Safety practises that we talked about, and practised included equalising ears to prevent burst and painful eardrums, 100 metre swim test, buddy systems, placing out a dive flag, underwater communication/hand signals, 15 minutes of treading water and of course being informed of the marine life, environment and activities that we will be experience on our trip. Most accidents often occur due to a person lack of understanding and knowledge of the environment and the area. Using common sense was also a helpful way of staying safe, as we knew to avoid ponding surf and rocky shores, contact with the marine life,…

A lathe is a machine tool which rotates the workpiece on its axis to perform various operations such as cutting, sanding, knurling, drilling, or deformation with tools that are applied to the workpiece to create an object which has symmetry about an axis of rotation.Lathes are used in woodturning, metalworking, metal spinning, and glassworking. Lathes can be used to shape pottery, the best-known design being the potter's wheel. Most suitably equipped metalworking lathes can also be used to produce most solids of revolution, plane surfaces and screw threads or helices. Ornamental lathes can produce three-dimensional solids of incredible complexity. The material can be held in place by either one or two centers, at least one of which can be moved horizontally to accommodate varying material lengths. Other workholding methods include clamping the work about the axis of rotation using a chuck or collet, or to a faceplate, using clamps or dogs.…

Clay brickwork is made from selected clays that are moulded or cut into shape and fired in ovens. the firing process transforms the clay into a building component with high compressive strength and excellent weathering qualities, attributes that have been exploited for millennia to build structures ranging from single-storey huts to enormous viaducts. Clay brickwork is australia’s most widely used external cladding and loadbearing wall medium. Clay bricks are readily available, massproduced, thoroughly tested modular building components. Their most desirable acoustic and thermal properties derive from their relatively high mass. Clay bricks are generally affordable, require little or no maintenance and possess high durability and load bearing capacity. The use of clay brickwork is informed by extensive Australian research, manufacturing and construction experience.…

Ceramics encompass such a vast array of materials that a concise definition is almost impossible. However, one workable definition of ceramics is a refractory, inorganic and non-metallic material. Ceramics can be divided into two classes: traditional and advanced. Traditional ceramics include clay products, silicate glass and cement; while advanced ceramics consist of carbides (SiC), pure oxides (Al203), nitrides (Si3N4), non-silicate glasses and many others. In OGMR vision, a special attention should be driven to the traditional ceramics, specifically to clay products. Ceramics offer a lot of advantages compared to other materials. They are harder and stiffer than steel; more heat and corrosion resistant than many other materials or polymers; less dense than most of metals and their alloys; and their raw materials are both plentiful and inexpensive. Ceramic materials display a wide range of properties which facilitate their use in many different product areas. In case of valorisation of natural resources of the country, the project wishes to focus on creation of ceramic production units, therefore, the sponsors‟ attention should focus on a number of certain clay, feldspar and kaolin deposits.…

    Fire Safety

    * Fire Safety Essay After a recent fire at Seton Hall University in South Orange, NJ killed three students who did not respond to what they thought was a false alarm, officials at Oswego State University are being especially careful when it comes to the issue of fire safety. This semester there is a new policy regarding the confiscation of items considered being hazardous. The policy states that any items that are found and have the potential to cause a fire, such as candles, incense, and certain appliances like microwaves, and sandwich makers, will be confiscated and not returned to the students they were taken from. Under the old policy students were able to get the items back at the end of the year. Around 200 candles were taken from students in Onondaga Hall alone last year. According to the Oswego Fire Department, the dorms are built compartmentalized, which means that if the door to a room in which there is a fire is shut, the fire will be somewhat contained. This procedure will help the fire from spreading rapidly. The doors to all rooms are fire resistant. Although these safety features help increase students' chances of survival in the case of a tragedy, they cannot be relied on as the only life-saving precast…
