Greed And Jealousy In 'The Necklace'
'Man who drops a watch in a toilet is bound to have a crappy time.” - Chinese proverb. “The Necklace” is an interesting tale that takes place during 19th century France. The cause and effect of this story’s plot is both pretty straightforward and ironic about how greed and jealousy are cruel mistresses.
The first cause that starts this shindig is the caste system in 1800’s France. The effect is that when the main character Madame Loisel is born into a caste that she feels to low for her standards(this is also a cause). The effect when she gets married she becomes angry at the husband because they have mixed views about their current caste (place in society.) The husband is grateful for everything his job, his wife, the invitation he scored to go to a party that

The invitation is the whole thing that seems to kick off this rollercoaster when the wife starts griping about girl problems. The griping is both an effect and a cause when the husband sets aside his hard earned money that he wanted to buy a gun with to hunt with his friends. And instead buy his wife a dress for the party. The effect from the dress was that she (the wife) wanted a necklace, so she borrowed her friends diamond necklace. The party isn’t really that important event wise since nothing happens so, let's skip forwards to the end of the party. During the walk home from the party the wife notices the necklace is missing. This causes the couple to look frantically around for the supposedly expensive necklace. In the end no necklace to return to the friend so, Madame Loisel decides to buy a new one. One problem, the husband is the only worker of the two so he makes all the money, but he can’t cause he doesn’t have any left after buying the dress. As a result they go into a lot of debt and after 10 years they pay it off. This causes them to be poorer than poor

The necklace by Guy Maupassant is a story about a woman who was pretty and charming but she married poor. She wasn’t satisfied with her life and always wanted to live like the rich. Her husband did all he could to keep her happy. One day he brought home an invitation to attend a ball hoping this will delight his wife since she like to be fancy and rich. However his wife almost turned down the invitation because she didn’t have anything to wear. He was able to get her new clothing for the ball and to finish her outfit she borrowed a diamond necklace from a friend to wear to the ball. They had a great time at the ball however she lost the diamond necklace. She and her husband had to work hard and spend all their life savings to replace the necklace. At the end of the story, the woman ran into her friend she borrowed the necklace from and learned that it was a fake necklace instead of real diamonds. This is a very entertaining story and the writer was able to make the readers understand the deep and hidden meaning of events and because of that I agree that Maupassant ultimate goal is achieved through symbolism.…

Like many of Maupassant's short stories, "The Necklace" is told by a third-person narrator, who avoids judging the characters or their actions. The narrator does have access to the characters' thoughts, and mentions that Madame Loisel is unhappy because she feels that she married beneath her. But for the most part, the author simply describes the events of the story, leaving it up to the reader to determine the nature of the characters through their actions. Most of all, the narrator is concerned with Madame Loisel. Though most of the story concerns the events surrounding the ball, the narrator recounts her birth into a humble family, her marriage, and also the many years of poverty they suffer afterward as a result of losing the necklace.…
