Greed In A Good Man Is Hard To Find
In “A Good Man Is Hard to Find” by Flannery O’Connor, a family of four decides to go on a vacation joined by the grandmother. The family decides to take a road trip to Florida, but the grandmother shows the family the newspaper with the headlines stating there are three loose criminals also going there. The criminals are led by one who calls himself “the Misfit.” The vacation to Florida continues despite the grandmother’s disagreement and plea to go to Tennessee to see an old house the grandmother remembers from her childhood. As the family begins their vacation, the grandmother asks her son Bailey if he can bring her cat, a question Bailey quickly rejects. However, the grandmother sneaks her cat in the car anyway. The Misfit keeps the grandmother as his two accomplices’ handle the rest of the family. He explained to the grandmother “’it would’ve been better if you hadn’t reckernized me’” (492). As the time passes, the desperation in the grandmother’s survival grows. She begins to tell the Misfit that Jesus will forgive him for what he has done and repent all his sins. As he disagrees in self-doubt she takes the chance to save herself and explains it’s never too late all he needs to do is pray. The Misfit quickly acknowledged the grandmother did not want to help change his life, instead, she was looking for a way to escape from him shooting her. The Misfit explained to his men “’she would of been a good woman…if it had been someone there to shoot her every minute of her life’” (493). As the Misfit shot the grandmother, she fell back with her eyes open, staring at the cloudless sky, smiling.     In “A Good Man Is Hard to Find” by Flannery O’ Conner, she expresses much irony between the Grandmother & the escapee. Initially, I thought the Grandmother was just a little bit pushy in trying to get what she wanted. She didn’t want to travel to Florida with her son, Bailey & his family, she wanted to go to Tennessee to visit with other family members. She had read in the paper that their was a murderer on the lose & that he was headed to Florida. She use the story to try to influence Bailey not to take them all there but instead to go to Tennessee, claiming that she would never take her own children to such a place that the “misfit” was going to be at for fear of endangering her children! Grandmother tried to guilt Bailey into siding with her & changing her mind. Of course, she was given the option of staying home, but even June Star, her granddaughter said, grandmother would never stay home, she would never let them go anywhere without her. June Star was almost sounding as if she didn’t want her grandmother to go, but once they all started on the trip to Florida, it was the grandmother that manipulated her grandchildren into whining to get their father to take a stop along the way to see an old house that has a secret panel in it. She enticed the children with a lie to get what she wanted, but as they traveled down the old dirt road, she begun to realize that the house she remembered wasn’t in Georgia at all, it was back in Tennessee, but before she really had a chance to tell, the cat that she was hiding jumped out & onto Bailey while he was driving causing the car to spin out of control. & roll. Bailey’s wife & the baby went flying out of the car, the rest managed to escape without serious injury as well.…

    “You’ve got good blood.” “I know you come from nice people,(504) cried the grandmother. “Pray!”(505) she pleads using grace and religion to plead to the better nature of what she thinks is still a good man. The story “A Good Man is Hard to Find” is about a family on vacation to Florida. The family takes a detour down a dirt road to look at an old plantation house that the grandmother tells a story about. She describes the house in such an intriguing way that most of the family is very eager to see it. However on the way the grandmother realizes that the house isn’t in Georgia at all but in fact in Tennessee, where she was longing to go instead of Florida. This startles her and she begins knocking things around and the cat jumps out of the basket landing on Bailey’s neck causing the car accident that leaves them stranded on the lonely road. When a passing car stops to help the grandmother quickly recognizes one of the men as “The Misfit”, a dangerous man who has escaped from prison.     A Good Man is Hard to Find" by Flannery O'Connor is a short story that depicts a family road trip to Florida that ends in an abysmal tragedy when they meet the Misfit, a remorseless convict who has escaped from prison. In the beginning, the Grandmother is obsessed with everything worldly and superficial. She is completely focused on herself in relation to how others think of her. Towards the end of the story, the grandmother finds herself in ominous dialogue with The Misfit. In the story, The Misfit represents a quasi-final judgment. He does this by acting like a mirror. He lets whatever The Grandmother says bounce right off him. He never agrees nor disagrees with the grandmother, and in the end, he is the one who kills her. At the end of the story, before the Grandmother meets her fate, she has a moment of redemption. She finally distinguishes The Misfit for who he really is, not a psychopathic killer on the loose; but a person just like herself. The Misfit, being a man who is not created from social class; he is a simple human being just like the grandmother. At this point she sees herself in relation to everyone else. She finally realizes that she is not made by her class. Society makes the class, and she just fits into it. She shows this by claiming that The Misfit could be one of her own children.     The Misfit. The Misfit, The Misfit, The Misfit. So many questions are raised about character called “The Misfit”. Was he born to be a killer? Was he a victim of childhood curiosity? Was he simply a good man turned bad over time? Or was his whole attitude a struggle of his true belief system? The Misfit stays on his own moral code regardless of the evil that he has committed. His morals are his own right, not by traditional standards, but by his steadfast and consistent actions. He’s an unlikely source, seeming to have not a moral fiber in his being, but demonstrates deep convictions that others in the story are not able to reveal. As deviant and depraved as The Misfit might have been, he still relied on his moral code to guide his actions.
