Greed In The Story 'The Monkey's Paw'

\ W. W Jacob’s, science fiction story “The Monkey’s Paw” takes place in New England in a near past. The White family was having a meeting the Sergeant-Major Morris, about his trip to India, and how he found a so-called mystical charm in the shape of a monkey’s paw. This paw is alleged to grant three wishes to three different people, but this paw is also a curse. Anyone who uses the paw to wish something, that person will obtain a conflict relating to the wish. One theme of the story is that greed is bad and everyone has a little bit of greed inside of them, for example, when the White family is gifted the opportunity to get any three wishes they desired, their greed starts to take over, and this is when fate kicked in. While some might argue that not EVERYONE has greed, and that if they were gifted with the opportunity to have any three wishes that they would wish for something charitable, but I know that there are no selfless deeds, even if
White is grief stricken over Herbert’s death and will do anything to get Herbert back. So she forces Mr. White to wish Herbert alive again. And while some might argue that this is not greedy and that this shows her love for Herbert, Mrs. White is still being greedy by using that second wish and instead of doing it herself, she forces her husband to make the wish knowing something bad will then happen to him instead of her.

In conclusion, the theme of the story is that greed is bad and that no matter what you do, you will gain something and lose something out of it. Whether it is winning the lottery and losing your friends because you think you’re too good for them or that they want your money and not you. Either way you lose your friends, and you have lost your ability to know if they want to be your friends because of you or because of your money. W. W.
