Greek Architecture

Thesis; In my point of view, Functionality is based on the foundation of Greek architecture , like the architecture style in the some cities such as Ephesus, Millet and Assos.

Greek architecture is based on the houses called “Megaron”.The Megaron houses, which has four corners and an entrance, has some pillars around. In fact they are temples and for this reason the people musn’t enter in it.Only they pray out of temple. The outside of it is much more important than inside. The division of place is seen in Greek architecture like in Egypt architecture (between B.C 1800-2000 Miken age). This part is a mixed mass of places in a central yard.Sewage system and central heating was first seen in Crete.Miken culture was abolished by Doric’s in B.C 1000’s.Then they made up a new and more modern culture there.Minos on Crete, Miken in Greece existed by Ionians in Anatolia.Ionians are very important in Anatolia. They became the residents of Ephesus, Milet, Foça, Prene and Izmir.Dorics founded the cities Bodrum and Datça.These cities are known as “Police States” in Greek history. The culture of these states has leaded the Greek art.The primary cities of Greek civilization, where the governers lived in, is on high lands. There are huge and thick walls around the city.Ephesus, Milet, Prene, Bergama,Didim and Assos are the first founded cities in Anatolia. There is an order which roads divide each other. In my point of view, Functionality is based on the foundation of Greek architecture , like the architecture style in the some cities such as Ephesus, Millet and Assos.

To begin, the Greek architecture had the intentions to include a large number of their cultural values like the ones that has something to do with the Greek city that is in the temples. The temples were built on top of the site that was raised above a city with concerns of value and the center of civic life. Also the Greek architecture along with the temple was made according to the exact rules of geometry which supports the cultural values of proportion and equality. First the Greek architecture had developed a set of orders that has a separate type of architecture that is better used in the three orders first Doric, second Iconic, and third Corinthian.…

The Parthenon building in Athens was started in 447 BC and completed in 432. It represents a tangible and the visible power of the Athenian Empire. Having also the influence from the Athenian politician, Perikles. The Pantheon Building is in Rome, Italy and was constructed in 126 AD. The name Pantheon comes from the Greek language meaning ''every god''. It’s in a circular shape rather than the rectangular shape of the Parthenon Building in Athens. It is currently being used a Church dedicated to St. Mary and has been since the 7th century. For these buildings, I have found that the functionality or use of them has been quite different from each other. The Parthenon was used as both a treasury in the smaller rooms and as cult statues rooms in the larger areas.…

One of the most important elements in Greek and Roman architecture was balance and symmetry (see figure [3]) which was hugely influential in the structure of neo-classical. Many neo-classical architecture have one component that can be identified as its style, the use of columns, that are normally built to almost the same height as the building. Columns are used to secure the symmetrical and balance of the dimension of the building as it is the efficacious and evident use of method as for exterior. Also, the uses of columns support the pediment. The arch and columns, however, have comparatively become a symbol of Greek and Roman's architectural style. Some believes those features are a conspicuous and crucial part in the revival of its style. Thus it remains a ‘staple of neoclassical architecture’, together with its ‘distinctive domed roof’ (N/A. Many historians believe that the Greek and Roman architecture, known as "classical architecture," evolved from basic Egyptian column design, consisting of a pedestal, column and "equity" or top. The Greeks and Romans out this design by creating five more types of columns to support their many civilian buildings and religious temples. The Romans also borrowed from the Etruscan arch design to create the dome.…

Greco-Roman architecture was not only known for its columns but also for their sculptures. Their sculptures were one of the first to try to make it look as proportional and most human as possible and in most cases attempted to glorify them (i.e. in a pose that symbolized strength or showed off their muscles). Before that, the art would have characteristics that were abnormal, for example bigger eyes for a god, to show how they were all seeing or they appeared human but very stiff looking. They were also used to show the strength of their people. In some cases they were placed inside a temple to keep them from being destroyed easily by the environment. Thanks to many different cultures, (including the Muslim culture) even though Greece’s high influence ended, their culture and architecture was preserved.…

The architecture in Greece was very precise in every detail, causing it itself to become art. The buildings were built in a very methodical order, this ensured for safe, strong buildings that would look similar to one another. Over time there came to be three main orders. Doric, the oldest and most simple, was made of stone and evolved from buildings previous built of wood. The Ionic was more decorative with a base, as well as being taller and thinner. Corinthian, a lot like Ionic, was the most decorative with leaves and floral patterns.…

All across our nation we have been burdened as American citizens by what feels like a moral dilemma. The issue of births from unauthorized immigrant parents has become more prevalent in the past decade. In 2007, 9% of all babies were born to immigrant parents in the United States (Passel and Cohn). More recently, in 2013, 295,000 babies were born to illegal aliens (“Overall number of unauthorized immigration hold steady since 2009”). Thus presenting an obvious problem that needs to be evaluated rather than ignored. Though one must consider the detrimental effect, this could have on a child. Is it wrong to separate a mother from their child once they have been born in the U.S.? Children of illegal immigrants face consequences for their parents being undocumented citizens.…

From studying the architecture of this ancient society, one can assume various things about its inhabitants such as beliefs, ways of lifestyle and levels of intelligence. The first, and probably the most prominent, detail that one can reveal from ancient Greek architecture is that the people of this society were very religious. Many of the temples in and around Greece were dedicated to a certain god goddess. The apparent reason for the creation of these miraculous temples was to serve as home for a god or goddess. The fact that the ancient Greeks created these temples for this purpose shows the great importance of worshipping and pleasing the gods and goddesses. One example of a great ancient Greek temple dedicated to a certain god or goddess is The Parthenon of Greece, built on the Acropolis in Athens. This temple is dedicated solely to the goddess Athena. Another great detail that reveals much about the religious factors of this society would be the inscriptions found on the walls of these temples and even on some of the statues that the Grecians sculpted. These inscriptions show the names and evident pictures of various amounts of gods and goddesses and present details about what they wore and looked like, what they were rulers of and even what some of their powers consisted of. The fact that these inscriptions show the multiple numbers of gods and goddesses evidently means that the ancient Greek society worshipped a vast number of gods and goddesses making them polytheists. Also, the discovery of the ancient Greek tombs of the deceased and what the Grecians buried along…

Clay was a very important part of ancient Greek culture. Back then they did not have glass or plastic to make containers out of. Luckily clay was easy to find in Greece. Most Greek pottery was shaped for a particular function or a number of functions. They were used around the house, or for ceremonies, or even entertainment. The reason I came up with this design was from the internet. I looked up Greek pottery and there was plenty so it was hard to choose but I really liked the pots called Lekythos. Lekythos is used usually to describe a pot that has a tall and squat shape, a base, a single vertical handle, a narrow neck, and a small mouth. I made a really similar pot to the lekythos. As you can see I have no particular design on my pot but I have a picture, and that picture is of Zeus. Zeus took a good part in ancient Greek times. He was the king of the gods, the ruler of Mount Olympus and the god of the sky and thunder. His symbols are the thunderbolt, eagle, bull, and oak. There are many other specific pots of Zeus but I chose a simple one because the simpler the better.…

Greek life was dominated by religion. So the temples of ancient Greece were the biggest and most beautiful, they also had a political purpose as they were often built to celebrate civic power and pride, or offer thanksgiving to the patron deity of a city for success in war. The Greeks developed three architectural systems, called orders, each with their own distinctive proportions and detailing. The Greek orders are: Doric, Ionic, and Corinthian. In the Doric order, Parthenon which is the temple of Athena Parthenos, Greek goddess of wisdom, on the Acropolis in Athens. The Parthenon was built in the 5th century BC, and despite the enormous damage it has sustained over the centuries, it still communicates the ideals of order and harmony for which Greek architecture is known. In the Ionic order Erechtheum the temple from the middle classical period of Greek art and architecture, built on the Acropolis of Athens between 421 and 405BC. . Acropolis in Greek means "The Sacred Rock, the high city". All around the world the Acropolis of Athens is known as 'The Acropolis '. The Erechtheum contained sanctuaries to Athena Polias, Poseidon, and Erechtheus. In the Corinthian Order most ornate of the classic orders of architecture. It was also the latest, not arriving at full development until the middle of the 4th cent. B.C. The oldest known is found in the temple of Apollo at Bassae. The temple of Zeus at Athens was perhaps the most notable of the Corinthian temples.…
