The country of Greece, in 507 BC, was established with the idea of democracy. It…
Since my sophomore year in high school, I have always wanted to join a fraternity. First, I think it is a great experience for students to witness the greek culture as they attend college. In addition, the shows, parties, and other activities really excite me. Finally, not only does all the fun excite me, but a fraternity is also a brotherhood. Therefore, I think it is a great idea to join a fraternity.…
“όμοιος ομοίω αεί πελάζει” – the meaning of this Greek expression is similar to that of “birds of a feather flock together,” and with the blue-and-white plume of Greek flags flying proudly on front porches and displayed in shop windows, this expression well portrays the thriving Greek community of Danforth Avenue: redefined on Canadian soil, yet proud of history, heritage, and home. Encounter men and women who left native lands over the last 50 years and eavesdrop on random conversations — you may or may not be able to understand the friendly banter depending on your mastery of Greek. Officially named “GreekTown on the Danforth,” GreekTown, The Danforth, and the Danforth Village are used by locals to describe one of the largest Greek neighbourhoods in North America. Toronto’s Greektown can be found along Danforth Avenue starting from Greenwood Avenu all the way – heading west – just passed Broadview Avenue. Enter into a world of restaurants, cafés, and specialty shops where gyros, souvlaki, and a wealth of authentic Greek fare is readily available — culinary specialties celebrated yearly at the Taste of the Danforth, a weekend festival attracting over a million people amidst lively music and fun activities for the whole family. For dining, shopping, strolling, lounging, or people watching, GreekTown on the Danforth is a warm, inviting community with reasonably-priced homes, great schools, and fantastic parks.…
Ancient Greek civilizations originated in 2000 B.C. and lasted to about 300 B.C. their culture still impacts Western civilization. Also Greeks spread their ideas all over the world. They contributed significantly with the ideas of geometry, philosophy, government, sporting events, architecture, sculpture, drama, and more. All of this came about and reached new heights during Greece’s “Golden Age”. This age lasted for about 50 years. Today all of our lives are greatly affected and influenced from the lives of Greeks.…
Greek democracy was in some way unfair. There were many both fair and unfair things about Ancient Greece. One unfair thing was that only males who were citizens were allowed to vote, no women, no men who weren’t citizens. That was unfair. Mainly men had power over everything and to me that was unfair. One fair thing is that all men were treated equally in some way. Just because you were “poor” or not extremely rich didn’t mean that you could not have a job. Slaves were used. Peasants were used. The image in document 3 shows a photo or drawing on pottery of slaves working really hard at their job and peasants at a market. This goes to show a fair side of Greece. Greek democracy was very lenient towards their military. They even paid their military…
I took a trip to Greek town Casino in Detroit Michigan with my father, this trip was something of an unexpected trip but I figured it was a great place to observe the behaviors of many different cultures as Greek town casino is the home of a multicultural society. I wanted to observe the behaviors of those between African American’s and Caucasian persons. I wanted to see if one race over the other tended to gamble more or if one culture got more aggressive as the night went on.…
My father’s parents were born in a small village in the Peloponnese. They were kind and humble people that eventually made their way to Athens. My mother’s parents were born in Kafkaso, a town in Minor Asia, which at that time belonged to Greece. With the war of 1921, the Turks forced my mother’s parents to flee to Athens. They were wealthy and proud, as were many Pontian Greeks at that time. Both of my parents were born in Athens in the fifties. My mother left Athens in 1969, America bound and my father followed soon after.…
It was not until the turn of the century that the yearly Greek immigrants numbered a thousand or more. They were mostly young men and boys escaping poverty by sailing towards the bright light of America. Some came to avoid the compulsory three-year military service in the Greek army where a peasant youth could seldom rise above a menial. A great…
The Greek settlement started in small trading posts, but then soon grew into very successful merchant cities. The Greeks settled in southern Italy because it had good agriculture land and harbor sites. In Sicily, Greeks carved up the island, taking over its best sites. The Greeks settled on the island of Ischia, which was off the bay of Naples in Campania. They started to expand at Cumae and establish new cities, nea polis, in Naples. This gave the Greeks access to those agriculture riches of Campania.…
Courses in modern Greek literature, language, and history are offered for credit in many colleges and universities. Some were initially promoted by members of the Modern Greek Studies Association, founded at Princeton in 1969. Most relate to Greece, of course, but the scholarly study of Greek America has also expanded in recent years. Such systematic study goes back at least to 1911, when Henry Pratt Fairchild published Greek Immigration to the United States. Thomas Burgess followed with Greeks in America (1913). Since then many books and monographs, including master’s theses and doctoral dissertations, have helped to make the Greek minority one of the more thoroughly researched in the nation. The most authoritative account to date remains The Greeks in the United States (1964) by Theodore Saloutos. Of late an interesting adjunct to these endeavors by social scientists has been an inquiry into the modern Greek presence in our literature, with respect to both fictional characters and creative writers.…
Greek Cuisine is certainly one of the most wanted flavors in the entire world, but what is it about Greek food that makes it so exceptional? Well there are five features of Greek food that make it stand out. The first is, the basic ingredients in Greek dishes are usually nourishing. You'll find a lot of vegetables added to the mix, with fish, legumes and cereals being some of the other main ingredients in traditional recipes (S. Linda, 2012). Second, the food has a whole lot more flavor to it, simply all because the locals use a lot of herbs and spices, including dill, garlic, oregano, onion, bay laurel leaves and mint. A few other choices consist of thyme, basil (S. Linda, 2012). Thirdly, Greek food is unique because the recipes are actually quite easy to make (S. Linda, 2012). The fourth distinguishing characteristic of Greek cuisine is that there is no beef. Lamb is the staple meat for most Greek dishes. This is because of the fact that the terrain and the climate have made the breeding of sheep and goat better than cattle (S. Linda, 2012). Greek dishes usually come with a few mezedes, or appetizers. Each region has their specialty, which makes the food rather varied so that you don't easily grow weary. A lot of these appetizers are packed with so much flavor, and are the perfect balance of tradition, health and tastiness (Yao, B.H, 2012).…
The city states of Cyrene and Sicily were founded by the Greeks in ancient times, circa 7th century BC. These colonisations were due to the land hunger, need for trade, overpopulation and political and civil disputes that were prevalent during the time period, making it necessary to colonise other parts of the Mediterranean such as the Italian islands and northern Africa. This colonisation also led to changes in class structure, trade practices, lifestyles, agriculture and the spread of Greek ideas..…
There are currently two main parties that dominate Greece’s political system. The political platform of the Pan Hellenic Socialist Movement (PASOK) began in 1974 and emerged with a western flair, was considered disciplined and well organized. The party’s materialized from the military movement against the resistance just a few years…
Greece’s current population is 10,906,851 million people, which allows it to be ranked the 83rd highest populated country. Greece current birth rate is 8.5-births/1,000 populations and currents death rate is 11.2-deaths/1,000 populations. The Crude Birth/ Death rate is figured out by the number of births divided by 1000 people in a population over a given time period which is usually a year. An interesting fact that was founded when doing research is that as a culture, the Greek population tends to live longer and have many kids during their life which is why it is normal for Greek families to have huge families.…
Contributions of Ancient Greece Many of the roots of Western society can be traced back to ancient Greece. The longest areas of contribution are architecture, medicine, and philosophy. The philosophical area of ancient Greece is one of the most important; it foundededucational laws and many other things. Also architecture was a major part of what ancient Greece left behind considering they constructed huge buildings that still stand today. Greece was known as one of the founders of modern medicine since they learned how to fix dislocated joints and broken arms. Those are the major contributions left behind from the Greek’s. One of the advancement’s that affects western civilization is architecture. Greece created huge buildings such as the Parthenon and Pantheon. Columns that are used in the Parthenonare found all over the world today such as the White House and other Government buildings such as the Capital Building and The Jefferson Memorial. Also the limestone and marble in the buildings and column’s are still used today because of their beauty and durability. The amazing architecture of Greece gave us the idea of creating massive buildings and columns. One of the greatest contributions of ancient Greece is philosophy. Aristotle, the great philosopher believed that reason is the one thing that guides lives. The three philosophers Aristotle, Plato, and Socrates founded the main idea of philosophy today. Socrates thought that you should ask questions that caused you to think deeply about a subject and find the truth in everything. Plato founded the idea that there should be laws on education. These three philosophers together created the idea that we should take what life gives us but find the truth in everything. These famous Greek philosophers set morals and ideas that we use in everyday life. One of the greatest achievements in the ancient world was medicine. There were many doctors who practiced things that will make patients feel better or be cured…
