At least that was until Green’s life took a sharp turn after the fire, she couldn’t move on from her past, she tried to cover her self with thorns until her finger’s bled, she tried to tattoo herself until nobody recognised her, and she even wore her dad’s old worn clothes yet she could still not shake the fact that her loved ones had die. She was not Green anymore, she was Ash. It was not until, through coincidental encounters she met a dog that couldn’t run, a wise old neighbour, two sparrows that couldn't fly, a hawk that couldn’t hunt, and most importantly, a boy who lost his mother. Though these relationships Ash, shared her pain with her companions, and healed with them. One way Alice Hoffman demonstrates the theme is when she showed near the end of the story that Green was writing her own story because she wasn’t afraid of her past, and she was proud to share it. She goes there every day looking for chestnuts to make into bread. Later on in the story, she isn’t making bread just for herself, but for others. Before his incident at the tree, Finny was a sports all star. He was gifted with superior sports skills; this was shown when he beat the school swimming record without ever having practiced at all. Once the fall occurred, Finny’s life was changed forever. “Sports are finished for him [Finny], after an accident like that. Of course. . . . If I [Stanpole] had the slightest hope that he could do more than walk I’d be all for trying for everything. There is no such hope” (55). Finny’s life revolved around sports, and once the accident occurred, his life was over. To Finny, the tree represented loss, sadness, and eventually death. As shown in the book, A Separate Peace, the tree plays a very important role in the lives of both Gene and Finny, the two main characters. The tree symbolizes the tree of the knowledge of good and evil from the Bible, it represents fear, hatred, and jealousy to Gene, and it also represents loss and sadness to…

Equality states that “It is my mind which thinks, and the judgment of my mind is the only searchlight that can find the truth” (Rand 94). In order for me to explain what this quote means, I have to break it down and understand each section. In the first half of the quote, “It is my mind which thinks,...” (Rand 94) Equality is stating that he uses his own brain/mind to think and no one else's. The second half states “..., and the judgment of my mind is the only searchlight that can find the truth” (Rand 94), which means that what Equality thinks is right and what is wrong is the only way to find the truth. The word “Searchlight” has a major significance because a searchlight is a powerful outdoor electric light used to give a sense of direction.…

The color green also generally stands for the future, life, and exploration, which Fitzgerald proves in this quote. Nick portrays an indifferent melancholy tone on Gatsby’s life when he states “Gatsby believed in the green light, the orgiastic future that year by year recedes before us”(Fitzgerald 180). The word “recedes” signifies how Gatsby’s feelings never go away and always reoccur. This shows significance because Gatsby reveals his incapability to move one from Daisy and his past. He ends up only battling himself and chasing his own lonely sad fate. The incapability to move on shows Gatsby’s hardships and the American dream…
