Their numerous channels of distribution, strong resources and competencies, and consumers favoring the supermarket to purchase whole bean specialty coffee, GMCR should be able to perfectly meet the driving forces of the industry. Although they are positioned for competitive consistency and have qualities that set them apart from their competitors, they have very few sources of sustainable competitive advantage and still need to go the extra mile to match the level of Starbucks.
Being an independent roaster, I believe they have what it takes to accomplish this as they have the time and energy to focus all of their attention on increasing market share and expanding into new geographic markets. Expanding to other regions other brands specific are already dominating in will definitely present challenges in creating a loyal customer base. Regardless, Green Mountain Coffee Roasters has incredible strength and a solid platform to grow its business in the coming years (Weinstein, 2012). Its overall technologies and differentiators should set them apart from

    * In discussion with the company's management, you have learned that ECR currently has about 10% of the coffee bean market in Ontario. Its coffee is considered to be a premium product because of its ethical sources but also because it purchases only the highest quality of Arabica beans and uses a special just-in-time roasting and delivery business process that puts the very best-quality product into the stores at the peak of its flavour. About 75% of its sales are to independent neighbourhood coffee shops in urban areas. ECR also sells to one major coffee…

Legal and Regulatory- These forces impact Green Mountain Coffee Rosters daily. In my opinion the one legal or regulatory force GMCR encounters is the Clayton Act. This stands out to me because of all the brands that are under the GMCR banner (Lister, 2012). The Clayton act prohibits board of directors being in position to make decisions for competing companies working under the same corporate banner.…

Green Mountain coffee as a premium coffee maker, has only two current large threats, Starbucks, and Seattle’s best coffee. The leader of the premium coffee industry is Starbucks and does have the necessary resources to effectively compete with Green Mountain Coffee. Another issue facing Green Mountain Coffee is the threat of new entry. Since the premium coffee industry is a growing market, and with a relatively easy entrance into the market, this in turn increases the overall amount of product in the market and creates an overabundance in product. To combat rivalry as well as ensure supply Green Mountain as been very active in starting up coffee bean farms in South America to ensure quality and availability in the future. One strong point that Green Mountain possesses is that as far as premium coffee producers go, they are highly visible in work place offices as well as available at many gas stations in which they lend or lease coffee making equipment to these establishments and offer superior service, train, and perform preventative maintenance on this equipment. The potential switching costs for the buyers of Green Mountain would make it unattractive for them to switch to another supplier.…

Billions of people across the globe choose to have a cup of coffee each morning to start the day or as a morning work break but coffee has become more than just a drink. Coffee has become an ingrained part of various cultures and coffee shops can be found in most every city around the world. It is little wonder that coffee ranks among the world’s largest commodity markets second only to oil ("Dangerous Grounds: About the Show", 2013). Given diversity and competition in the market, the small startup company of Custom Coffee & Chocolate will require a clear mission statement, detailed business analysis, and tactical plans that will help it to increase market share within the Seattle community.…

The single cup brewing machine is coffee’s fastest growing sector. An impressive 38% of the coffee machines sold last year being single cup machines and this sector saw a triple digit growth in 2011. So, as Starbucks tries to stay on top of the coffee market, the $8 million pod market is not the sort of trend this former trendsetter could have afford to ignore; this market is “ripe for innovation” (Wilson, 2012). Starbucks is attempting to capitalize on the popularity of the single-cup coffee machines that use K-Cups. Starbucks’ president for channel development and emerging brands, Jeff Hansberry, noted that 1 out of 3 coffee machines sold is a single-cup machine. He also noted that in the U.S., sales grew by 143 percent last year. Indeed this is a great market as Hansberry notes that “customers want convenience and great quality in their home” (Strom, 2012); that is exactly what Starbucks aims to accomplish with their new Verismo. With the new Verismo Starbucks is able to offer customers the same high-quality coffee and the all the “complexity of the espresso shots” they use in their coffee shops right in their own home (Starbucks, 2012)…
