This image, was made by a man named Phil May. This cartoon was in ‘The Bulletin Magazine’ on the 21st of August. 1886 with the title ‘The Mongolian Octopus’. On one of the tentacles it says customs robbery and shows a customs office. Another one says opium and shows someone smoking the drug. Others say things like cheap labour and bribery even immortality. All of these suggest that the Asians have brought over these terrible things. It suggests that they rob Australians and that if they get rid of the Asian migrants all their problems will be solved. The head of the Mongolian man is very big and shows him scrunching up his face almost like he is deliberately bringing these awful things to Australia to make us look like a bad country.

This cartoon influenced people to see the Asians as bad people because of what they did to Australia and making us look bad as a country. It made people/Australians afraid of the Asians in case that they would get a disease from the Asians and get robbed for everything they have got. Although there were probably some Asians that robbed it was unfair to say they all are criminals. As a result of seeing cartoons like this people started to hate the Asian immigrants. This would give people the impression that Asians are a horrible race of people making white Australians racist. A tentacle displays Asians being immoral to Australians, with all these tentacles meaning something bad happening to Australians which is not a good thing for Australia and think we are a racist country. Another tentacle shows ‘OPIUM’ which is an illegal drug in Australia made from flowers and disrespecting our country and showing no respect for the law. There is another tentacle called ‘FAN TAN’ which is a source of gambling. There is another tentacle named ‘BRIBERY’ which
