According to an article written by Natalie Walker et al., “…grief management has been most frequently adopted within the sports psychology literature when describing responses to athletic injury. … the grieving individual passes through the following five sequential stages: (1) denial, (2) anger, (3) bargaining, (4) depression, (5) acceptance” (Walker et al. 2007). The athlete in this case study comes from a high-profile life style due to his ability to perform on the football field. He has worked hard in earning several titles and having a highly recognized name. As a freshman, he was a ranked in the top 25 as one of the best overall

In a country that thrives on competition it is no wonder Americans have embraced football as their favorite sport. Every weekend during football season, millions line up, tune in, or change the channel to watch their favorite teams do battle for 60 minutes. It is a rough physical game and at the collegiate and professional levels, played by some of the worlds best athletes. There are many dangers involved when participating in such a sport. Rarely will a player go through a game without being hurt in some capacity. This is part of the game and everyone involved knows it. Because of this, players often have to be the judge of whether they are “Injured”, or “hurt.” The difference being that someone who is just hurt can still perform physically and should be able to return to the game. However if a player is injured, this means that they have been hurt to the point where they are not physically able to play, or to the point that further play could escalate the injury into something much more serious. For most injuries this distinction is easy to make, for instance a sprained ankle can either be ran on or it cant, depending on the extent of the sprain. If a player suffers a concussion though, it can be much more difficult for that player to consider himself injured.…

On May 2, 2012, the National Football League lost one of its elite players to suicide: Junior Seau. Seau played for the Chargers, Dolphins, and the Patriots during his professional football career and was a 12-time Pro Bowler before retiring in 2009. Three years after his retirement however, Seau committed suicide by shooting himself in the chest with a gun. This greatly shocked the football world and its image of Junior Seau as a person, but it soon realized the cause for his action. Shortly after Seau’s death, researchers examined Seau’s brain and found that it contained a disease known as chronic traumatic encephalopathy which is formed by repeated blows to the head; a very common disease among former football players (Football Brains). The Seau family then filed a lawsuit against the NFL claiming that the league held back information from the players about the danger of continuous blows to the head (Seau’s Death on Brain Injuries).…

    Concussions In Football

“The UNC concussion research suggests that returning to the game before a concussion is especially dangerous. Sustaining a second blow before recovering from the first is far more damaging than either blow in isolation.” (BEYERSTEIN 2) With all these negative talks about the results of concussion in the NFL, it makes it difficult for many parents to put their children in Katy Youth Football or any type of football association. Although Football mainly teaches discipline and character, many parents encourage their children to stay away from the sport. Professional athletes are willing to do whatever it takes to be successful and leave a legacy in the NFL, regardless of the pain that football release on their body. In the past, players who received concussions during the games were portrayed as weak and scared to play the game. They were ignored until they decided to come back to the game. Many retired players realize it was the cause of the concussion that doesn’t make them function very well. With this major problem, they decide to hold the NFL…

Thesis: College athletes who are facing an injury during their season should be assisted by a consoler or a sport psychologist for the overall welfare of players (because they are at risk of a psychological breakdown.) A conflicting argument could be that athletes are always receiving special treatment and should be treated the same as any other college student. My main audience that I would be speaking to would be sport organizations, coaches, student athletes, and just students not participating in a sport. Ways to persuade my audience is by giving evidence of my argument and also by using my personal experience. I currently play baseball while attending college and have suffered…

It may only take a couple of seconds for a college football player’s career or season to be taken away from him. Hundreds of college football players get hurt every year; most are sidelined for just a couple of weeks. Some players, however, lose their entire season and even careers to just one injury. When a player is not able to play the entire season, they may lose their scholarship. Standing on a football field’s sideline with an injury is one of the worst feelings a player can have. Normally, teams only have one or two players who can start at a position. Knowing which positions get hurt the most would be useful, because a coach or manager then knows which positions he needs to draft or recruit to his team, so there are more than one or two players capable of playing the position. If for example, offensive running backs are the most prone to being injured, a coach can recruit and train…

From my standpoint, concussions are a huge part of football and they do cause major damage to your brain in the grand scheme of life. The bigger the conflict with football players isn’t getting injured or having major injuries impact on us for life after football such as concussions. Football players die twice in life, when they’re career is done, and when they’re done. People like myself who have been playing since they were 8 or 9 years-old form themselves to become a better football player, and it just so happens that in that process, we became a better man outside of football. We feel like when we decide to stop playing, or when we have to stop playing, we’re missing a piece of us. As stated earlier in my essay, parents are now keeping their sons away from football or keeping them from playing until high school. Of course, no one can really argue that this isn’t a bad idea. I, however, disagree because football formed me to who I am today. If I am ever blessed with a son in the future, I will hope he takes an interest in football so he can have the same experience as I did; it helped me create lifelong friends and invaluable learning opportunities. It made me not normal, I am a beast. It made me not give up when times are too hard for normal human beings. It made me have a new perspective on life. It made life easier. No matter how many injuries have occurred to me, and no matter how much pain I am in from football, I am forever grateful for everything football has brought to…

Anywhere from just a broken bone, or in the long run they worry for the CTE disease.“I'm horrified every time an athlete runs out on a field on a Friday night," Zac's mother, Brenda Easter, told the Register after learning of McKee's latest findings. "We don't know who the next Zac is going to be." (Board, Editorial). This statement was made after a football player’s mom had to deal with the loss of her son after his football career when he had CTE. This disease caused Zac to commit suicide because he didn’t have emotional control and he was struggling. This has happened multiple times, therefore football is not a safe sport because of the effects it leaves on…

With athletics being dangerous from the time you couldn’t catch a ball, to the time when it hurts just to stand, there are risks with any sport. So whenever college athletes step on the court, field, or wherever they compete, they are putting their bodies at risk, as well as future paychecks. In the history of NCAA there have been many professional careers either derailed or stopped forever because of injuries. In the 2006 college football season one of the best players, Michael Bush was playing for the Louisville Cardinals when he suffered a season ending, and career defining injury. He tore almost every ligament in his knee and sadly saw his professional draft stock slip to a place he didn’t want it to be. Prior to his senior season he…
