Not many people may have noticed this, but everyone, at some point, has chosen a lifelong goal in none other than grammar school - we have all been asked, “What do you want to be when you grow up?”. At the steady age of eleven, I took this to heart, and have ever since, been heading in the direction of becoming a math teacher. This is a form of grit - deciding this will not benefit me tomorrow, next week, next year, but closer to next decade. Not only, but a whole lot of work has gone into keeping my math grades supplementary. If I had decided to be a math teacher, but then maybe decided on an artist, no, a writer, no - that would not have shown grit. More, someone like that would be less likely to get a job. She wanted to go out on her own away from her aunt, and just in time she was willed a plot of land for farming. Even though she was just sixteen, and just one person without any help, she decided to go and prove up on it. She just as well could have sold it all for more money than she’d know what to do with, but she wanted to prove up on that land. Later, the book describes her laboured efforts to get it into shape, including near-death experiences and a whole lot of hard work. (spoiler alert) Even after all of her work went down the drain and she failed, having to give up her plot, she still didn’t give up, and started over with less than she began with going
