Furthermore, added benefits for having a group debate would be team cooperation. Having a team of people who are all agree on the debate topic, can pose a threat to the opponent’s team and will have a better chance at winning the argument. If everyone on the team has completed their research and brainstormed before attending the debate, they will be able to identify the weaknesses in their opponent’s arguments. This power in numbers can become a huge benefit to any team. A drawback with group debates is having to allow everyone the opportunity to speak. During this time period, you could forget about something you wanted to say or may not remember the other points of view from your opponents that you wanted to comment on. While working in-group debates, you will be presented with a lot more information at once.
With one on one debates, I have learned it is hard to complete your argument before your opponent tries to respond, hence interrupting you, which can force you to lose your train of thought. For this very reason this is a tactic I believe they try to use, and can work well if they are successful. An interruption that provides you with some information that you are not ready for and may contradict your own argument can be harmful to your proposals.
