Small group communication includes numbers from 3 to about 20 people, and large group communication includes numbers larger than that e.g. a lecture hall of 300 students. In the first stage of group development the members begin by defining what will be acceptable behavior. This stage of development is forming and is complete when the members feel as though they are a part of the group. Without this stage the group would not be able to hold the members accountable for their actions. The second stage of group development is storming. It is an intragroup conflict that will emerge (Robbins & Judge, 2007). In storming the group members begin to resist limitations placed on the group. Knowing boundaries is important in making the most out of the resources that are available. Storming is complete when a clear chain of command can be made. The third stage in group development is norming. In this stage the members of the group begin to form relationships, work cohesively and have a strong sense of group identity. When the group becomes solid and all members agree on how each member should behave the development can move into the next stage of carrying out tasks. This fourth stage is…

Group communication relies on prior understanding of the group objectives and the group's culture. Unlike individual communication, individuals in a group do not provide feedback directly to one another. Rather, they provide feedback to be addressed by the entire group. With group communication, every participant’s input is necessary to help the group comprehend the objectives so that the whole group can benefit and arrive at mutual understanding. Therefore, in individual communication, the exchange of ideas and opinion is specific to the two individuals involved. Whereas, group communication involves many people and the communication is not specific to just one person. Group communication includes the input of many people which makes the process more difficult. Everyone in the group contributes ideas that need consideration. Members of a group want to feel that their input is having impact on the group dynamics.…
