Abstract
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to briefly describe a model of group learning, examine variables that stimulate a group to learn and determine the group’s readiness to learn, and provide suggested interventions to enhance group readiness to learn.

Also during the first meeting, group members introduced themselves, described their backgrounds, and listened intently to the Pat and Dr Bergmann. The CEO attended the first meeting. He gave each member an annual report published by the media of all area hospitals’ success rates that showed that maximizing patients’ positive outcomes was critical to the hospital’s competitiveness. Infection control was not the only issue, certainly, but it was the cornerstone of positive outcomes in almost every area of the hospital. His presence as well as the annual report emphasized the importance of the effort. He expressed his confidence in the group and his gratitude to the members for agreeing to take time from their busy schedules to participate. He said that the group should continue their effort for as long as it takes to make a difference. He expected that they would meet regularly (without specifying what that meant) for six to nine months. The CEO’s presence made the triggers for learning more immediate and forceful as well as motivating the group to do its important work.
After the CEO left, two of the members, Margaret Fine, a surgeon, stated that she had
