Groupthink In The Book Quit, By Susan Cain
“The power of introvert” is the article that I had read by Susan Cain, author of the Book “Quit”. Her book talks about the benefit of collaboration and introvert, who likes to work alone. Groupthink is a good idea, but what about introverts? Can they behave with them and share some time and work space with the group thinkers? Groupthink is everywhere. It’s in school, companies, fashion and religions places. The benefit from groupthinks in these places to share ideas and to know what everyone thinks about. People who like to sit in group for example, in school or in meeting to solve a problem or to share ideas about some homework or brainstorming, Groupthink will be the best idea for that. Not only in school or company business, but also in fashion and artistic, now many of them like …show more content…
Steve Woznick, the invention of the personal computer Apple said” Work alone…not on a committee. Not on a team” and he means by that, that if a person works by himself, he can create more than if he works with a group of people and he an examples like artists and engineers who like to live in their own world then achieve some wonderful things. In my opinion, Groupthink and working alone is equal, because in both of them they will give a good solution. But Groupthink has bad results more than the introverts. Because the introverts will focus on his work, think of his idea, find a solution and give a result without any problems to anyone. In conclusion, Groupthink and, introverts are a good solution to end with a big result and to achieve what the person want. Everyone has the right to choose how to work, with a groupthink or alone. In the end he should reach his goal and achieve what he plans in his

According to study.com website (2015), a groupthink can simply be defined as an occurrence that gives a group of people a fault verdict or a conclusion a that a group has made that is an ineffective decision whereby it was reached just to appease the spirit of harmony among group members than allowing individuals to act independently and creatively. As alluded on, groupthink blocks individual creativity by ignoring alternatives allowing irrational actions to tale precedence. It happens most when individuals have similar background and the group is refusing external opinions. The result are that the decisions are flawed and they often come at a cost.…

The definition of a group is “two or more individuals, interacting and interdependent, who have come together to achieve particular objectives” (Robbins & Judge, 2011, p. 277). As a group, you can either work together well, or poorly. Groups can appoint individual members to certain parts of assignments, or individual tasks and then collaborate later together in a group discussion. This can cause functional or dysfunctional conflict. Functional conflict can be worked through even when individuals have different points of view (conflict). Dysfunctional conflict however, can ruin the integrity of the group and cause extreme conflicts. “One researcher says that the problems of brainstorming demonstrate the problems of groups. If you leave groups to their own devices, he says, they’re going to do a very miserable job” (Robbins & Judge, 2011, p. 278).…

Some of the positive points about doing a paper alone is that all the resources will be reliable and valid for the paper, there is no argument with others, and the writer’s ideas are going to be the only ones used for the paper. Negative points about working alone are the amount of time used by only one person to do all the work, it might take long hours to be able to find use all the resources and find what is needed to complete the paper. Another negative point about working individually is the lack of support by others, no suggestions or opinions from others about the paper could be difficult, there is always good to have another set of eye to review your work or extra help from someone to maybe see or think from a different point of view and also to ensure that the material covered is the correct material to avoid submitting a bad paper, which at the end, there is only one person to blame for, the writer. In most cases, during the learning process to write a paper, it is not up to the student the decision to work as a team or alone, but once again, it is a learning process where mistakes are going to be made, either working collaboratively or individually, a lesson is learned that in the long run will result on the improvement…

Initially, I had a negative view on group working because of the challenges that I had. When I was in high school, my five other friends and I used to work together in a music competition. Although we were supposed to get together to practice for the event, we were only able to meet up once a week. In addition to having a hard time with time scheduling, we often did not have a consensus of opinion. Whenever we had a discussion, we usually ended up with no results. So it always took a long time for us to make a decision. Consequently, the performance did not turn out as well as we expected. Because of this initial failure, I thought group work was time consuming and ineffective. However, I have changed my opinion lately because of the successful results in some of my laboratory classes. In each laboratory assignment, it is nearly impossible to work by myself because there are a lot of steps and each step needs to be very precise and accurate. Therefore, a group of two or three students will work more effectively compared to an individual because they can help to remind each other and finish the assignment faster. Based on those experiences, one more time I give myself a chance to work in a group and figured out how work effectively. Finally, thank to the Small group communication class, I found out that group work can become very productive if all the members in the group cooperate and follow the principles of small group communication. In this paper, I want to talk…

I have always had a different idea of what groupthink really means, to me I thought of it as a bad idea from someone amongst a group of people that had not been voiced seemingly because the person having this thought lacks confidence or backing. More like trying to proof to your business partners that an idea of using an outdated tactic to target a young crowd is not the best idea In its own definition Wikipedia(2013) describes groupthink as a psychological phenomenon that occurs within a group of people, in which the desire for harmony or conformity in the group results in an incorrect or deviant decision- making outcome, whereas it can also be viewed as the practice of thinking or making decisions as a group…

Even though when we work in groups we usually strive for a harmonious and cooperative environment, this does not mean that an environment in which all members are in total agreement is desirable. The phenomenon termed groupthink describes the kind of situations in which each member of a group attempts to conform his/her opinion to what they believe to be the consensus of the group. Whereas this might be seen by some as a way of keeping the peace among group members, it is a rather negative attitude to have, as concentrating on "playing nice" usually detracts from the process of actually tackling the issues and exploring creative solutions. Thus, it becomes imperative to identify the symptoms of groupthink in order to correct it.…

Have you ever been part of a team that made a terrible decision? You may have been part of a groupthink event. Groupthink is a term coined by Psychologist Irving Janis. He determined cohesive groups try to maintain unanimity rather than utilize all data to make a good decision (Whyte, 2000). Some historic examples of groupthink are the attack on Pearl Harbor, Iranian hostage rescue attempt, and the Holocaust.…

When effective group management and high organisation skills are applied, group work can bring students a wide range of skills and abilities related to people and problem solving. Group work demonstrates student’s capacity to communicate effectively, share and consider opinions, establish trust, analyse the group process, resolve conflicts and also develop their creativity. 1. In my experience, I found that decision-making groups do not tend toward groupthink. Groupthink is a mode of thinking that people engage in when they are deeply involved in a cohesive in-group, when the members’ striving for unanimity override their motivation to realistically appraise alternative courses of action. Groups displaying most of the symptoms of groupthink are more likely to display symptoms ofdefective decision making, resulting in poor policy outcomes. There are seven ways to prevent this:…

The idea of groupthink does not have a positive meaning because decision making is hard to do as a group; it is damaged group burdens that lead to a worsening of “rational effectiveness, truth analysis, and ethical decision”. Groupthink happens when groups are extremely organized and when they are under significant stress to make a valuable choice (Janis, 1972). A group is particularly weak to groupthink when its participants are alike in training, when the group is separated from outer ideas, and when there are no strong procedures for making choices. Groupthink refers to an emotional occurrence in which people struggle for agreement in a group. In order for groupthink to occur the group needs to be extremely consistent, protected from other…

The common problem when working in a group is social loafing. “Social loafing is the tendency for individuals to expend less effort when working collectively than when working individually.”(pg.299) The best way to discourage social loafers is limit the group size, holding each individual responsible for their part, and setting group goals. One of the common stereotypes about groups is that team work intimates individual effort and increases the groups’ capacity to achieve its goals. However, in late 1920s, German psychologist names Max Ringelmann did a rope-pulling experiment on groups. He assumed that the group of three would pull three times as much as one person, and group of eight would pull eight times as much as one person. He came to a conclusion that more people in the group may be better for the total productivity, but the individual’s productivity of each group member declines.…
