Rubbish, boy, rubbish. Look at me. Am I growing? Certainly not. Only when I was very little. I gave up growing when I was extremely small, along with all the other nasty childish habits like laziness and disobedience and greed and sloppiness and untidiness and stupidity. You haven’t given up any of these things, have you? You’re eights years old. That’s old enough to know better. If you don’t stop growing soon, it’ll be too late. It’s ridiculous. You’re nearly as tall as me already.…

Symbolism is "the practice of representing things by symbols, or of investing things with a symbolic meaning or character" according to dictionary.com. This literary device is employed frequently by authors, and Edgar Allan Poe is no exception. Considered the father of American Gothic literature, Poe is best known for his poem "The Raven." "The Fall of the House of Usher" is perhaps his best-known short story; it set the standard by which Gothic literature, setting and even the term itself are measured.…

Growing up as an Asian American, height has been a topic that arose among the conversations. In Chinese culture, parents often like to showcase their kids as well as brag about their child’s accomplishments, goals and physical appearance. With that in mind, families, including mine took height as an aspiration that would make my family proud. My growth spurt started to appear around the end of my elementary school. I specifically remember when I was in Taiwan traveling to my friend’s house when my mom gave me a dark, oily brown colored soup put in a water bottle. Driving, my mom told me to drink it on the way to his house, consequently the taste was so horrendous that I almost fainted that night. The soup contained a Chinese herb prescribed…

Hypothesis: IF the arm span and height of Grade 11 IB Biology students are measured and the means compared, THEN the mean of the arm spans will be the same as the mean of the heights. This is expected BECAUSE in Leonardo da Vinci’s famous drawing, The Vitruvian Man, he outlines correlations between the ideal human proportions using a square to compare a man’s height to his outstretched arms (Gorman, 2002). Furthermore, growth in the human body is stimulated by growth hormone (Campbell and Reece, 2002), which may equally affect the lengthening of bones in the legs, spine, shoulders, and arms.…

This Mutants reading finished the piece about growth. Armand Marie Leroi talked about how other factors effect height and how what a pygmy population might be misidentified because of this. He discussed the Medieval fad of castration in order to increase height. Next Leroi discussed some abnormal growth disorders such as the one portrayed in the movie “Elephant Man.” Finally, he noted some pattern between height and characteristics that are seemingly effaced by it. Clearly, from this reading and the previous one height and growth play a dynamic role in how we live our lives.…

Many countries experience perpetual food shortages and distribution problems. These result in chronic and often widespread hunger amongst significant numbers of people. Human populations respond to chronic hunger and malnutrition by decreasing body size, known in medical terms as stunting or stunted growth. This process starts in utero if the mother is malnourished and continues through approximately the third year of life. It leads to higher infant and child mortality, but at rates far lower than during famines. Once stunting has occurred, improved nutritional intake later in life cannot reverse the damage. Stunting itself is viewed as a coping mechanism, designed to bring body size into alignment with the calories available during adulthood in the location where the child is born. Limiting body size as a way of adapting to low levels of energy (calories) adversely affects health in three…

Growth has long been recognized as a measure of the health of individuals, hence part of the reasoning for the use of growth charts. For individuals, as indicators of health problems, growth trends are tracked for significant deviations and growth is also monitored for significant deficiency from genetic expectations. Genetics is a major factor in determining the height of individuals, though it is far less influential in regard to populations. Average height is relevant to the measurement of the health and wellness (standard of living and quality of life) of populations.[2] Attributed as a significant reason for the trend of increasing height in parts of Europe are the egalitarian populations where proper medical care and adequate nutrition are relatively equally distributed.[3] Changes in diet (nutrition) and a general rise in quality of health care and standard of living are the cited factors in the Asian populations. Average height in the United States has remained essentially stagnant since the 1950s even as the racial and ethnic background of residents has shifted. Malnutrition including chronic undernutrition and acute malnutrition is known to have caused stunted growth in various populations.[4] This has been seen in North Korean, portions of African, certain historical European, and other populations.[5] Developing countries such as Guatemala have rates of stunting in children under 5 living as high as 82.2% in Totonicapán,…
