Growing Up In A Hospital
Every year for the past five years during the height of tax season I've become ill and ended up in the hospital. I've always become hospitalized in March, my busiest time of the year working as tax accountant. Stress for me is always the worst in March, just before the tax deadline.

The reason for my hospitalization is always different, but yields the same result. Hospitalization results in paying a large deductible from my insurance plan, usually around $4000.00.

But the worst of it is taking ten steps backwards on my healing journey. Last year (January 2008) I set one goal for the coming year. Stay out of the hospital. I wrote it down and posted it in the closet for daily review.

1.Set a goal.

2.Write it down.

3.Make it measurable

Where there is no sun or fun( but at the same price tag as a 1 week vacation) and the tropical music is replaced by a crazed confused woman across the hall making a run for it again and her bed monitor going off at 2A.M. as she tried to escape.

I'm here to tell you that 2009 is going to be different.

My affirmation this year was to have a healthy and prosperous tax season.

That was it.

So over the Christmas holiday I began to repeat this affirmation and implant it into my subconscious. This new phrase fits very well with my affirmation (by choosing happy joyous thoughts, I create and happy joyous world, I am safe and free).

Both these affirmations describe what I truly desire in my life and want to attract.

You see I have no idea how to accomplish this in my life, but I simply put it out there to the universe and I will remain open to anything that would come my way. If you can ask the universe (God) and you keep your eyes open and are willing to accept it, you may be amazed at what can and will come your way.

This is going to be a great year. Expect great things and watch them materialize for you. Here is where you can find out more about the Law of

The ER waiting room smelled stale. Sick babies and toddlers were crying, waiting to see a doctor. My brother was laying on the tan tiled hospital floor. He was shaking terribly as the antibiotics from the previous hospital wore off and the infection set in more. Both of his hands were red and swollen. His right hand, had a black mark from where the IV initially infected. His left hand was swollen to the size of a small balloon, kind of like a blown up rubber glove I used to get from the doctor when I was younger. My mom took her jacket off to cover him. His skin was hot to the touch but he was still freezing. His fever was 101.2 but there were no open rooms in the ER at our second attempt at a hospital. We had to get him antibiotics…

It was a chilly day on March 6, 2007. Me and my family were on 495 going to the Holy Cross Hospital with a slight delay of traffic. For some reason, I kept fiddling with my fingers, I was really nervous to see him. We took the exit 31A and we all shifted to the left since it was a sharp turn to the right. My big sister, Maisie, was on my shoulder and we shifted her head fell on my lap. She woke up and asked where we were. “We are almost there Maisie” my Dad said. We stopped at the traffic light and I fiddled with my fingers some more. “Stop fiddling with your fingers!” Maisie whispered to me. In my head, I say “I can’t, he is the first boy of the family, the first! Besides me!” I stopped fiddling and looked at the huge structure in front of me, The Holy Cross Hospital.…

My daddy served in the Navy during WWII. When the war was over he returned to states and was immediately hospitalized. He was so young and had experienced things he never wanted to think about again. However, he always complimented the nurses that took care of him. They helped heal his body, but more importantly they helped to heal his spirit and soul. I cannot count the times he said, “I want one of you girls to be a nurse,” and I knew it was going to be me.…

My experience in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) was very saddening. It was sadder than visiting the adult ICU. The babies were so tiny and seem to be so fragile. Each baby has its own unique story. Some of the babies were as young as 23 weeks gestation at birth. Some had been there a while. The charge nurse walked me through each part of the NICU. She informed me that the NICU was an upper eighty bed unit. At present they had 41 babies. She also showed me the OR suite they have on site in the NICU. She made me aware of the fact that they perform all surgeries there; both inpatient and outpatient. I also had the opportunity to go to the special nursery. There, I watched the…

"Hospital Evening" and "Monday" by Gwen Harwood are two poems that explore the hardship of immigrants in Australia. Written in the late 20th century after the "White Australia Policy" was abolished and thousands of immigrants landed on Australian shores, the poems revolve around Krote, a German music teacher, who has migrated to Australia and his struggles with racism and the harshness of the Australian environment. The poems negative construction of Australian people acts as a critique of the Australian stereotype of being laid-back and friendly and brings to light the harshness of the environment and the xenophobia which was instilled in Australian culture at the time. This is done so through the juxtapositioning of the settings of Australia and Germany, the negative representations of Australian people and the perception of Krote by Australian people.…

A study completed by Vik, Nygård, Borell, and Josephsson (2008) looked at how older adults with disabilities participate in daily life after hospitalization. They found through their interviews with the participants that the need for being in charge was important to each person. All three of the participants in the study discharged themselves from the hospital. In this study they also noted that the residents dislike waiting and frequent changes in staff. Thus, in the program being implemented, it will be important for the residents to be in charge of what activities they want to do and each resident will be encouraged to take the lead in establishing their daily schedule. It is also the goal that one OTA student will be paired with the…
