With the first World War, we saw a mass migration of diverse individual’s progress to the North in search of new opportunities. Given the large number of U.S soldiers who were in active service and the “defense boom,” there were a great number of labor opportunities available in the industrial division. Prospects which, ultimately, culminated during the homecoming of U.S Soldiers, causing an economic decline which soon enflamed, as the U.S dealt with yet another catastrophe, the Great Depression. A misfortune that disadvantaged African Americans relentlessly, as opposed to white Americans, as they continued to encounter injustices that had only intensified since the Great Depression. The onset of World War II, brought another “defense boom” that allowed Detroit to lead “the nation in [an] economic escape from the Great Depression” presenting various employment opportunities in the industrial division once again (19).…

The free reduced lunch was not listed, but mine are over half or all the students receiving free or reduced lunches. These are important because they insure that all the students get at least two healthy meals…
According to Suki Kim, the author of “Facing Poverty with a Rich Girl’s habits, learning how to survive physically, emotionally, and educationally in a world that was far removed from the style of life she was accustomed to was one of the biggest challenges of her life. Kim went from having a father who was considered a millionaire, living in a mansion complete with a governess to living in a small apartment in another person’s home within a short period of time. While reeling from the shock and devastation of losing all that was familiar to her, she also had to learn English, how to do everything for herself that was originally done for her, and get used to a new school and way of life. In her essay, she discusses the various challenges that rose up to face her almost daily.…
Poverty in Northern Kentucky is more common than most people would assume. My definition for Social Justice is promoting society to have equal rights economically, keeping human dignity, giving the people political and social rights, and making sure there is opportunity for our own society to succeed. By definition relates to poverty in Northern Kentucky because the community is suffering from poverty. Northern Kentucky has the highest poverty level in the tri-state area. This is an issue because people are lacking the needs to survive on a daily basis. My social justice definition clearing interlinks with poverty, my goals to making sure all humans have equal rights economically, people that are in poverty lack there human dignity, because…
It can be debated that financial prominence is the most important aspect of a person's place in society, more so than race, gender, or religion. This paper reconnoiters the effects of growing up in poverty and the economic, social, and psychological effects of being raised in such an environment. In today’s world, the word poverty is well known throughout most societies. Poverty may have the definition of anyone who lives pay check to pay check. Or for some poverty may be as extreme as one who lives underneath any shelter they can find with no belongings. John Kenneth Galbraith’s definition of poverty is when an individual’s income, even if adequate for survival, falls behind that of the community’s standard. Poverty may also be defined as…
In our society today, social class and stratification both play huge roles in how individuals and groups alike interact and function amongst each another. According to Parrillo, social stratification is the hierarchical classification of the members of society based on the unequal distribution of resources, power and prestige. (Parrillo, 2012) Parrillo illustrates the term social class by stating, it designates people’s place in the stratification hierarchy, identifying those in each grouping who share similar levels of income, status, property, power and types of lifestyle.…

Authors Lars Eighner and Barbara Ehrenreich discuss in their struggles of everyday issues with poverty in America. Barbara Ehrenreich, author of “Nickel-and-Dimed: On (Not) Getting By in America, raises awareness of the lives of low-wage, poverty stricken people being pushed into the labor market of welfare reform by highlighting the struggles they encounter daily. Last summer I went on a mission trip with the church and found myself in West Virginia. We stayed in McDowell County at an old school building, and this is the county we did most of our work in. McDowell County is the poorest county in West Virginia and one of the poorest in the county, with a rate of at least 35% of the population in poverty. The long lasting poverty is why we went there on our trip.…
The issue of poverty in the United States seems to lie on the grounds of race education and family structure. As expected I found that educational levels paralleled poverty levels. Unexpected , research was found to prove that race did in fact play a substantial role in poverty. Family structure along with other influential factors either locked an individual into poverty or provided a means for escape from the continuing cycle. Other factors contributing to poverty was the location of homes or neighborhoods and the accessibility to better paying jobs.…

America is one of the most developed nations of the world, but regardless of it, about 46.7 million people are suffering from poverty. To understand the concept of poverty, it is important to define the actual living conditions of the individuals that the government believes to be impoverished. America has presented itself as a culture of plenty, but poverty still manages to take a toll on many families. The southeastern United States consists of many pockets of profound poverty in well-known areas such as the Mississippi Delta, Appalachia, the Tennessee Valley, and the agricultural areas of Florida. From these selected areas, the Mississippi Delta has shown to be the region that has suffered from poverty the most. Poverty is a plague that…
In 2010, about 46.2 million people were considered poor. The nation’s poverty rate rose to 15.1 percent, whereas in 2009, 14.3 percent of people in America were living in poverty (Censky, 2011). That is an increase of 2.6 million people in 2010. In the United States, the federal poverty line – an absolute measure of annual income – is frequently used to determine who is categorized as poor (Ferris &ump; Stein, 2008, 2010). Currently the government defines the poverty line as an income of $11,139 for an individual and $22,314 for a family of four (Censky, 2011). In sociology, poverty can be defined using two terms – relative deprivation and absolute deprivation. Relative deprivation is a comparison between people and social class. With relative deprivation, people are considered poor if their standard of living is less than that of other members of society (Ferris &ump; Stein, 2008, 2010). Absolute deprivation is an objective measure of poverty, whereby people are considered poor because he or she is incapable to meet minimal fundamentals such as food, shelter, health care and material objects. Is it difficult to participate in society for those who live in an impoverished life? Many would say that people living in poverty are behind in our cultural movement; that he or she lack the essentials to be on an equal level with the rest of society. Many theories have been applied to the issue of poverty with controversy over how and if the poverty problem should be addressed. Inequality, homelessness, and the idea of the American dream also has an influence on poverty.…
Poverty is an epidemic that has swept the American nation many times over. Whether it be quietly lingering under the surface, or blatantly staring us in the face as it is in this current recession, it affects people across America on individual, community and national levels alike. While there are many causes and effects of poverty, it is important to view the issue of poverty and its causes from all angles when one seeks to tackle the problem. These factors include socio-economic status, mental illness, family values and work ethics, to name a few. In this essay, I will be examining these factors as they are discussed in the book, The Glass Castle by Jeanette Walls (referred to as Glass Castle throughout essay), as well as in the article Poverty in America from the Congressional Digest, December 2010 (referred to as Census throughout the essay).…
