Growing Up In The Military

Family Experience Growing up with a parent in the military was a challenging, yet extremely rewarding experience. My Father served 24 years in the United States Coast Guard, in which he climbed up the ranks as a marine mechanic. Throughout my Father’s career, I was able to see him adapt in high pressure scenarios and have been taught that persistence pays off, which is something that I keep with me even as I complete my Senior year at FSU. Having a parent in the military is often accompanied by having to relocate somewhat frequently, in which these difficult times helped mold my family into the tight knit group it is today. Both of my parents pushed me to put myself out there and make new friends, especially as I moved from place to place
Moving from school to school as a result of my Father’s job was difficult at first, but I always managed to adjust well and find my place. As a young child, specifically in elementary school, I absolutely loved to read and can say that some of my fondest memories growing up were in the library getting lost in the plethora of books they had to offer. Unfortunately, today I no longer enjoy reading as I did before, but can genuinely say that my excitement to learn is still there. My favorite subjects were always English and math, but American history is the one subject that I still am passionate about today and I can credit that to my eighth grade teacher, Mr. Gamble. Not only was Mr. Gamble my American history teacher, but he also taught my leadership class. Everything he taught was with great purpose behind it and he genuinely made learning fun by putting his own creative and exciting spin on everything. A monumental aspect of my academic life was when I was President of my middle school in eighth grade. Mr. Gamble also supervised me as President and truly inspired me to be a leader through and through. It was also during my elementary academic life that I first began to play sports, in which I played volleyball, softball, and lacrosse for both the school and recreational leagues. As a result of playing sports, I learned that I love to work with others in a team setting and that leading others is something that I thrive
