Mookie is racist toward Hispanics, making racial slurs at Tina’s mother and yelling at her to speak English, and complaining that his son’s name is Hector. Mookie also shouts racial slurs at Pino when provoked. Mookie also doesn’t like the way Sal likes his sister. Da Mayor is mainly racist against the Koreanss at the convenience store. He yells racial slurs at them for not carrying his favorite beer. Sal tries not to be racist most of the time, and sees the Italians on his hall of fame as a sense of pride, not racism. He treats Mookie well and most of the neighborhood unless provoked by Buggin’ Out or Radio. Couple like John and Joey had to fight for their right to be married, and deal with the consequences from everyone else. The liberty for interracial marriage was a hard fight, but was worth it so that these couples could marry. In “Do the Right Thing,” the right thing to do in a lot of these situations is questionable, and Da Mayor is always telling everyone to do the right thing and treat others with respect, but even he is at fault for racism against the Korean family that run the convenience store. Mookie seems to be in question on what the right thing to do is on many occasions, from Tina and his son, to how to react to the death of Radio. He ultimately does seem to make an effort at being a father at the end of the movie, but he chose poorly by throwing the trash can through the window of Sal’s and starting a mob that burnt down Sal’s Famous
