Guilty In Sophocles Oedipus The King

"Innocent until proven guilty", this saying seems to be quite straightforward and easy to comprehend. However, proving that an individual is innocent is not always so easy to understand .For example, Sophocles "Oedipus Rex", Oedipus ,is guiltless. It was not his purpose to kill his father, nor did he knowingly breed his mother. It was not Oedipus, in fact, that ended his father’s life, but the Shepherd viewed upon Oedipus with mercy and treason in his heart, and gave the monster in swaddling clothes to another, that he would grow away from his parents, and never know them. As a prince this was a condoned action, since being pushed aside was disrespect toward Oedipus. When the prince arrived in Thebes, defeated the Spinx, and was hailed king by the country, he had no idea that his awarded wife was also his mother; therefore, incest is extraneous to this man's actions. Jocasta and Laius clearly are to blame for the supposed crimes committed by Oedipus because they could have easily killed their child in a much more merciful way, or could have kept him living and nearby so that they could keep a close eye on him. He, himself, thinks that he was guilty of what he have done. But, while everyone including himself can blame and accused him of crimes that he didn’t even know he was doing already.
