The McKenzie-Condon Chicagoans was created in 1922. The team member, Jim Lanigan, Jimmy McPartland, Dick McPartland, Bud Freeman and Frank Teschemacher, were all the students from Austin High School. They always got together at a place named the Spoon and Straw to listen to their favorite jazz. One afternoon, they heard a new batch of music played by The New Orleans Rhythm Kings. They felt excited and played this kind of music five hours at the Spoon and Straw. They formed their band and named it “The Blue Friars” to salute the band of The New Orleans Rhythm Kings. Jimmy McPartland played the cornet, Dick McPartland played the banjo, Bud Freeman played C-Melody saxphone, Frank Teschemacher played a clarinet and Jim Lannigan played the sousaphone.…

The characteristics of American Jazz era of the 21st century closely resemble that of the European Classical era of the 19th-20th centuries. Jazz music is considered to be the free spirited spin off of it’s older sister classical music. “Classical composers envy the melodic verve, spontaneity and open emotion of improvisation; jazz musicians look to the larger scale, the coloristic and rhythmic flexibility and the respect given classical music.” Jazz music is defined by two fundamental elements of Classical music (the swing beat and the prevalence of improvisation). Since this is true, it indefinitely should be appreciated by critics almost as much as Classical music is. While the rhythms are not of classical nature, the harmonies and melodies of jazz stem directly from European music. In theory then, the boundaries between jazz and classical music seem to me to have been falsely erected. After all: What is jazz but ad-libbed classical music with a swing…
Saunders statement on the impact of Wilco song reflects his own values from his fiction by allowing him to relate his fictional stories to what people go through everyday. For Saunders, the song brings out the better in him, he feel like every type of situation has a solution. Even in the most conflicted scenario people are able or have the option to put aside their differences and workout their differences. Saunders writing style also includes writing things indirectly by giving out clues of what might be going on in a characters mind or even a scenario in the story, but he doesn’t tell his readers the problem directly. He allows his readers to process the information, take guesses and allows them to figure out things on their own as the…
Innocence is the most valuable and fragile thing that can be broken by committing the most simple of crimes. Loss of innocence is a feeling of guilt and having the feeling of having done something wrong. “The Bass, The River, and Sheila Mant” is a short and fictional story by W.D Wetherell in which the narrator chose Sheila Mant, a girl he was crazy about, over what he loves more which is fishing for bass. Later on he regrets the decision he has made. In “The Bass, The River, and Sheila Mant”, the narrator was not being truthful to himself because of the fact that he cut the line to the bass he has been trying to catch for a while, just to keep Sheila Mant. After this decision was made, the character realizes what he has…
The Jazz Age was a cultural movement that began around 1918, post WWI. It was born in New Orleans but later spread around the world, it was a beautiful mixture of jazz and march banding styled music and was often played by African-Americans. It was the first time that people began to move to the cities rather than in rural areas. It was the first time that African American were given the opportunity to progress in a society that failed them since the ending our slavery. After the war, new trends began to surface, for example: dancing, music, fashion, theater and all the other arts in an attempt to help ease the post-war feeling of the nation.…
What is Jazz? Well it depends on who you are asking. Where you come from, and believe it or not, what kind of culture you are raised in. “Jazz is a type of music of Black American origin characterized by improvisation, syncopation, and usually a regular or forceful rhythm, emerging at the beginning of the 20th century.” Now, you would think Jazz is a very fundamental genre to obtain but, that is not the case. Being a “Vocal Jazz Studies Major”, I observe the art of Jazz frequently, and I have come to realize there are several different forms of Jazz. For example, Swing is a form of Jazz that originated in the 1930’s which gave more of the dancing, head bobbing, and foot tapping feel to the atmosphere. Along with Swing, Fusion Jazz is also known as Jazz-Rock. It is mixed with Funk and R&B. There is one particular thing that both forms share, and that is they both require you to be energetic but, have you ever just wanted to listen to a song without feeling the need to sing or do too much? Have you ever wanted to listen to music for a change so you could relax? Have you ever wanted something that will give you the feel of an ocean lightly moving from the blow of the wind? I know I have and you can as well.…

In summary, Jazz and modern music differ in many areas, while they are identical in others. One thing known for certain is that Jazz music contains an abundance of American culture. This is part of the reason why the word, “fusion” holds such a strong association with jazz. Jazz began at about the beginning of the 1900s, and took off with a full head of steam until the end of the 1950s. At this time, there was a shift in popularity from jazz to rock music and jazz, true to its cultural background, was determined to stay alive. With that brought about some changes, and the way many artists dealt with this reality was through fusion. Now jazz has been fused with nearly every genre of music. When popular artists such as Jimi Hendrix or the Beatles came to fruition, fusion bridged the gap very smoothly with the new emerging genres. An…
What is jazz music? A single definition cannot be found. Many people try to define jazz music only to regress to trying to define what it does. Even this approach is difficult. People are only able to find things to agree on, such as agreeing that jazz is music. Jazz has been so many things throughout it long and illustrious history that it 's even hard to point out its origins, which stem from many places, many styles of music, and many people. However, there is an ongoing debate as to its precise origins. It is known to have evolved out of New Orleans in the 20th century and from they’re spread to the North and Midwest. Based in blues and ragtime, jazz have geographical "hot spots" throughout the country; New Orleans, Chicago, New York, and Kansas City. Each "hot spot" has its own history containing significant events and people that helped shape the musical style of that culture center. Kansas City is no exception. There are innumerable persons that helped make Kansas City jazz what it has become.…
Louis Armstrong, an influential figure in the Jazz world, once said, “If you have to ask what jazz is, you’ll never know.” Over time, jazz has kept its essential elements and original style, even as new styles have developed. Jazz, in its most basic form, is defined as “music that includes qualities such as swing, improvising, group interaction, developing an 'individual voice', and being open to different musical possibilities,” by Travis Jackson, a Professor of American Music. Improvisation, being the key element in every type of jazz, must be present for a piece to be considered jazz music. This element turns jazz musicians into composers and is essential to jazz styles of music. Another thing unique to jazz is its approach to rhythm. The…
