Statement of Problem
How, Popsicle sticks and rubber bands, can you build something to launch a gummy bear?
Hypothesis
If I tie three Popsicle sticks in a certain way, and tighten rubber bands around them, when you pull the rubber bands they will create enough potential energy to launch a gummy bear.
Variables
Independent: Rubber bands and, the Popsicle sticks
Dependent: The distance the gummy bear travels
Materials and Procedures
Materials:
• 3 rubber bands
• 3 popsicle sticks
• A gummy bear
• Measuring tape
Procedure:
1. Take 2 Popsicle sticks and attach them into a “V” shape with a rubber band.
2. Attach a 3rd Popsicle stick across the center of the other Popsicle sticks with a rubber band.
3. From there, stretch a rubber band across the top.
4. Then, take the gummy bear and suspend it back against the front of the rubber band and let go!
5. Lastly, record how far it went, using centimeters.
Qualitative Observations
I noticed that the further I pulled the rubber band back, the more potential energy was created, which increased the distance the gummy bear went.
Quantitative Results
Statistics
Mean: 12.83m
Median: 8.5m
Mode: None
Range: 15m
Analysis/Results
The data shows that when you pull back the rubber band, it creates potential energy and, when you let go of the rubber band it turns to kinetic energy. The data also shows that the further I pulled the rubber band back the further the gummy bear went. The statistics show that there is no mode because none of the distances were the same. For example, in Trial 1, I only pulled the rubber band back a little bit and it went 6.5 meters. Then in Trial 2, I pulled the rubber band back twice as far as in Trial 1 and it went 8.5 meters. Finally, in Trial 3, I pulled it back as far as it would go and it went 23.5 meters.
Possible Experimental Errors
• Accidentally using the back part of the rubber band to launch the gummy bear.
• Launched the gummy bear backwards.
Conclusion
This experiment proves that you can build something out of Popsicle sticks and rubber bands to launch a gummy bear. The purpose of this experiment was to show how a rubber band can create enough potential energy to launch a gummy bear in space. My hypothesis stated that if I tie three Popsicle sticks in a certain way and, tighten the rubber bands around them, that when you pull the rubber band back it will create enough potential energy to launch a gummy bear. The data from the experiment supports my hypothesis.
Recommendations for Further Experimentation and Practical Applications
I personally think we should be given more materials and more guidance for this experiment. Another possible experiment to prove potential energy is having different objects and lifting them up to the second floor of a building and drop it. You could then measure this by seeing how fast it takes the object to reach the ground and compare it to other objects.

Conclusion: My data clearly shows the differences between the height, width, and weight balance before and after the lab. Also that the salt water gummy height was the only one to decrease, while the Tap water gummy increased the most (2cm). I think the Tap water increased the gummies size the most because it’s easier for the gummy bear to soak in plain tap water than sugar water because the gummy already has the sugars in it. The salt water gummy shrunk because salt soaks up water and other substances. The sugar water gummy barley increased because I think the gummy already has sugar in it so I really just absorbed a bit of the water. I would like to point out not only did the gummy shrink in the salt water but I also was very sticky unlike the tap water which was a little slimy and the…

The energy of the can car is conserved because the PEe i (initial kinetic energy equals zero) is equal to the combination of the PEe f and the KEf which goes into dissipative forces, thermal energy through friction, or the energy is wasted through slippage. In my can car a lot of force was dissipated, to the point that PEi was greater than Ef. The can starts moving because once the rubber band is completely twisted, the wound rubber band tries to unwind. It should be easier for the rubber band to unwind by rotating the can than rotating the weights. Cans do not roll back and forth, because (at least in a my big can) the rubber band has the least amount of tension when it is barely wound (meaning a small force in PE=Fd), due to not having very much PE the can can not overcome…

A rubber band in the dictionary is “a loop of stretchy rubber for holding things together.”. They are able to be stretched and using a method you can shoot a rubber band. One way to shoot it is to get your point finger and place it on the inside of the rubber band. Then it you get your other point finger and put it into the inside of the rubber and from the top. After that you pull your fingers back and that will stretch it. Lastly let go of the finger next to you and that will send the rubber band fast to the other finger then it will topple over that finger and go flying through the room. Having the effect of being shot there still is a lot of interesting things about a rubber band. Most items expand when it is heated. Like if the…
