Gun Control
Gun control is not one issue, but many. To some people gun control is a crime issue; to others it is a rights issue. Gun control is a safety issue, an education issue, a racial issue, and a political issue, among others. Within each of these issues there are those who want more gun control legislation and those who want less, on both sides of this issue, opinions range from moderate to extreme. Like most topics relating to government and its ruling ability, the topic of gun control is based heavily on political affiliation. Since the 1950’s the majority of the Republican Party have strongly opposed gun control efforts, and have been aiming to shoot down legislation enacted at the local, state, and national levels. The republican viewpoint of anti-gun control has strong backing by the National Rifle Association (NRA) and many other gun control-lobbying organizations. The party insists on increased enforcement of laws already in place and stronger penalties for those who disobey, rather than creating entirely new gun control measures. On the other hand the popular view among the Democratic Party is for the enactment of new legislation for gun control. This party bases their argument on a loose interpretation of the constitution believing that the individual has the right to bear arms but under reasonable regulation. The Brady Campaign and the Coalition to Stop Gun Violence (CSGV) are organizations that back the Democratic Party’s views of pro gun control.
Guns are not for everyone. Certain individuals cannot handle a firearm safely, and some individuals choose to use firearms inappropriately. Our society has passed laws regulating the ownership and use of firearms, and more legislation is being considered. Most of this legislation restricts, to some degree, the rights of individuals to possess or use firearms. Some restrictions may be necessary, but some recent legislation may have gone too far. Society benefits from firearms in the hands of responsible citizens

    With heated debates and arguments about gun control, politicians are forced into “trying” to find a solution. Gun control is a popular subject though does have slow process process in America. Twice in the past two years the gun issue has reached the nation’s highest court. In the 2008 Supreme Court case District of Columbia v. Heller the court ruled that the Constitution protects an individual’s right to own a gun for personal use. But the decision only applied to federal laws and failed to address local and state laws. Thus, in July 2010 the Supreme Court ruled that the federal right to bear arms also applies at the state and local level. The ruling lifted a nearly 30-year-old Chicago gun ban. Obama calls for a “Sense of Urgency” to fight gun violence in a video recorded by “CNN”. Obama advocates for a better and improved ways to distribute guns such as creating more or hiring more people to do background checks. Obama having a Democratic viewpoint, respects the 2nd amendment but wants to bend it to what he believes will decrease violence.     On December 17, 2012 Jesus Manuel Garcia became upset because his girlfriend had broken up with him. Jesus text messaged his girlfriend saying he was going to go to the restaurant he worked at, and shoot someone. His girlfriend called the police about his message but by that time Jesus Manuel Garcia was at the restaurant he worked at, armed. He walked in and attempted to open fire but his weapon jammed. The patrons and employees fled the restaurant to the movie theater next door. Jesus followed them into the lobby and opened fire, hitting a man in the chest. By this time, an off duty police officer, who was working security, followed Jesus Manuel Garcia into the men’s’ restroom. He did not fire at her but because his gun was drawn the off duty officer fired one shot and wounded Jesus, the off duty officer then seized his weapon and arrested the would be killer. Both Jesus, and the man shot were taken to the hospital and are expected to recover. This story was not all over the news, unlike the Newtown shooting. In my belief, it was because no one was killed and the “bad guy” with the gun was stopped by a “good guy” with a gun. Because the media could not use this story as another example to ban or make stricter laws against guns. I do not think that laws should be any stricter to get guns, but the ones in place do need to be enforced.…

    Gun rights and gun control are always hot items during any political discussion, whether it is between peers or politicians. One of the many great advantages to being an American is the ability to choose for one's own self what to believe in, another advantage, in my opinion, is the right of the people to keep and bear arms. It is my intention over the next several pages to make you aware of my point of view on the issue of gun rights. I will bring up arguments for gun rights and against gun control, citing all sources used. Some topics to be discussed are the Second Amendment, media influence on weapons violence, and the effects of crime rates in areas that allow open or concealed carry. I would like to preface with some safety notes, clearly nobody should be using a weapon they do not feel safe operating or have no knowledge of how it operates. But this is not always the case, according to the National Center for Injury Prevention and Control, 606 Americans lost their lives through unintentional firearm injuries in 2010 (1). These unnecessary deaths could have been prevented with safety training and weapons familiarization. Another important aspect of safety is that role models reduce accidents, meaning if you practice safety and are knowledgeable about the local laws, those who look up to you will behave responsibly as well.…

    Gun control deals with a lot of facts and statistics. Agresti and Smith from Just Facts provides excellent facts on gun control. The first fact is crime and self defense. In 2014, there were roughly 14,249 murders and about 68% of those were with a weapon.(Agresti, Smith, 2016) This information provides a visual representation of just how many are gun related and non-gun related. A survey from the U.S. Department of Justice showed that of the 5.9 million crimes, only 10% were with a visible gun. This data shows that a small amount of crimes actually were with a gun and puts things into a different perspective. Other data shows that guns weren’t necessarily used for shooting, rather a scare tactic for felons. Agresti and Smith stated, “A 1994 survey conducted by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that Americans use guns to frighten away intruders who are breaking into their homes about 498,000 times per year.” This fact shows that guns aren’t always needed for its primary purpose and doesn’t hurt anyone. Guns when related to self-defense is very important and beneficial when compared to statistics. The next fact is background checks in the United States. The current federal law makes it illegal to purchase, possess, or transport firearms or ammunition if you fall under specific criteria. Topics ranging from firearm restrictions to background checks have been heavily discussed by both emotion and logic, by both gun supporters and gun control activists, and it seems like there is no middle ground for both parties to agree on. Crime rates influence guns demanded for self-protection, and guns demanded by criminals depend upon guns held by law-abiding citizens.
