The Sandy Hook Massacre is the second deadliest shooting by a single person in American history. According to CNN, this tragic attack took place at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut on December 14, 2012. The shooter, Adam Lanza, brought three guns into the school, two of which were pistols, and one of which was an assault rifle. To get into the building, which had an updated security system, he shot his own way into the building with his assault weapon. Lanza ended up murdering twenty-six people. Twenty of the twenty-six were six and seven year olds. As the first authorities approached him, Adam Lanza shot himself in the head, committing suicide (CNN 1-2).…
Over the last several years there has been an ongoing debate on how to interpret the Second Amendment and whether or not we should have gun control. With the Second Amendment specifically grants that "the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed." The controversy of it being that in the Second Amendment doesn't specify who "the people" are. This being said it leaves room for the legislative bodies and court to pass laws and interpretations that influence the way this Amendment is applied and enforced.…
The Second Amendment has been one of the most controversial topics that America faces today. The Second Amendment of the United States Constitution reads: "A well-regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed" (LII). Under the constitution, you are able to own guns but there has been many restrictions and Acts that control your rights to a minimum. Gun rights reforms are how the Acts and certain limitations are made. These reforms are made to help lower the dangers of these weapons and allow for higher protection. The Second Amendment and Gun Rights should be adapted to today’s society along with certain past events to allow citizens to bear arms publicly. In multiple scenarios, these past event may have been avoided if gun control was open to more eligible citizens.…
The tragedy of Sandy Hook Elementary has definitely been an eye-opener for many students and staff in schools. The shooting occurred on December 14, 2012 in Newtown, Connecticut. This horrible event took the life of many innocent students and staff of Sandy Hook. Twenty-year-old Adam Lanza shot twenty children and six adult staff members of Sandy Hook” ("Sandy Hook Elementary School Shooting"). It has definitely left many people wondering whether arming teachers with guns will prevent future incidents similar to this from occurring in the future.…
The right to bear arms has evolved into a danger to American society. American tradition is the biggest argument against creating restrictions on weapons with the potential to create a large causality total in mass shootings, such as assault weapons. The Washington Post (2016) has done several write ups on the topic of assault weapons, gun laws and mass shootings; this paper will reference several of those. Per Christopher Ingraham (2016) assault weapons such as semiautomatic weapons have played a large role in the death total in mass shootings considering, their popularity among mass shooters and the ability to purchase them easily. News sites CNN and CBS provide most of the specific information on the shootings and shooters that is used in…
The Second Amendment has brought up major arguments in American politics ever since 1876. Was it meant to insure that people in general have arms for personal safety, or was it to insure arms for the military service only? Gun control in America has its pros and cons, but the nation needs to decide which way the government goes on this topic because more school shootings will occur and terrorists can still get there hands on them.…
Firstly as someone who has owned and used many firearms for many years it bothered me greatly how many people seemingly thought that by prohibiting the ownership of these particular firearms that there would be a reduction in gun violence when there is no empirical data to support that claim. Over the previous two years there have been two mass shootings in Aurora, Colorado and Newtown, Connecticut which caused uproar in the political climate surrounding these firearms. The argument proposed against these firearms was an emotionally charged one that targeted these rifles in particular because of the fact that they can possess higher capacity magazines and that they have cosmetic features that can resemble military style weapons. The argument was that these firearms are more lethal and that in the hands of the wrong person can cause greater devastation than other firearms however the proposed ban conveniently failed to mention that less than 2% of all firearm crimes are committed with rifles and let alone “assault rifles” and that of this 2% many are self-inflicted. Another is that the biggest mass shooting in the United States wasn’t even with an “assault rifles” or even a rifle, it was with a pistol.…
This enacted a long series of measures trying to stop the spread of increasingly destructive firearms in gang violence.” The guns aren't bad, it's just the people who chooses to do bad with the firearm. America is basically the bad person with the gun, slaving everyone else on the land, by making laws and having millions of dollars. Gun laws need to be changed so that it is difficult to obtain guns and a person owning an illegal firearm will find himself with a stiff prison sentence even as a first-time offender; the law should benefit every race & not just one.…
The debate over the restrictions of gun control is centered on the Second Amendment to the Constitution, which gives people the right to bear arms. Gun control supporters believe that this explicit right does not extend to ownership of military-style firearms. For example, groups like the National Rifle Association argue that gun control infringes on the constitutional rights of law-abiding citizens. Gun control is an on-going debate because each year more people are killed by the use of guns. However, guns are not the result in the number of homicides each year, the problems rests with the irresponsible gun users. Gun Control would do nothing but harm America because guns offer protection and security…
Since 1982, there have been at least 85 public mass shootings across the country, with the killings unfolding in 34 states from Massachusetts to Hawaii. Due to these mass shootings, the left side/liberals believe that the United States’ government needs to act and create and enforce gun control laws. Some people view all guns, no matter the purpose, as malicious and there is too easy of access to own a gun. The second amendment is in existence because our Founding Father’s saw how important it is for a free country to be able to stand up for themselves against tyranny. Those who are pro-gun control do not understand the valuable means behind the foundation of the United States of America. For 200 years, the second amendment has helped…
Since the creation of the second amendment there has been controversy over the amendment’s purpose and the severity of gun control laws. Recently in the United States, this issue has escalated to an entirely new level due to several violent shootings at schools and other public venues. In an attempt to prevent more violence, the government has proposed several gun restriction laws; however, these proposals will have a negative effect on the security of the United States.…
The government has ways to protect the human race by enforcing rules and regulations before being able to purchase a firearm. We need to stop people from trying to restrict our use of firearms. The second amendment has been in place for us for many reasons. Some of those reasons include; tyranny, personal protection, recreational activities, and other self-inflicting cognitions. Tyranny is the main part in this issue.…
The Second Amendment protected every citizen’s right to bear arms, which should never be infringed upon. “The 2nd Amendment was ratified specifically so that Americans could defend themselves in such a manner, hence why it says, ‘The right of the people to keep and bear Arms shall not be infringed.’ Banning so-called ‘assault weapons’ is an infringement of our constitutional right to own guns. If assault weapons are banned, than Americans will be left defenseless.” (Poole). Leaving the citizens of the United States defenseless is not only unconstitutional but also morally wrong. It would be extremely unfair for the government to take our guns away because they believe it causes more crimes when in fact there are studies that prove that more guns equals less crimes.…
Gun control laws take away a person’s right to self-defense and take away their feeling of safety. The 2nd amendment allows people to feel safer. Less guns for protection will create an increase of homicides. States that don’t support the 2nd amendment have a higher murder rate, then a state that supports the 2nd amendment. Guns aren't the problem, people are the problem. Legally owned guns are frequently stolen and used by…
After reading Jimmy Carter 's essay on assault weapons, I have come to an agreement with his position that the government should reinstate a ban on assault weapons. Americans do not need to be in possession of semiautomatic assault weapons like AK-47, AR-15,and Uzis. There is rarely a necessity for the average American to even use or own them.…
