It was a nightmare had turned into reality. The bridge...I had to reach the bridge… The sanctuary of the bridge was ahead of me and I cracked the whip and Gunpowder whinnied and raced on ahead, an unstoppable force of nature. At last, I had reached the bridge. Turning to face the dark figure, he had pulled the reins, forcing his horse to raise up. My eyes could not turn away as the figure lifted the glowing head…Gunpowder jerked up in fear... and then there was a flash of light… then a sickening crack that reverberated as my head the ground.

Her laughter sounded like bells and then suddenly, everything had turned into a nightmare. The skies had become dark and a silhouette was behind her. I had tried to call out to warn her, but I was paralyzed, only able to watch as the woman screamed and was taken away. The dark figure had mounted on his horse and turned to me, its scarlet eyes fixated on mine, filled with something that could only be described as hate . NO!
My eyes snapped open, and when I rose, there was a sharp jolt of pain in my head and I moaned. Where was I?

My heart leapt for a moment before realizing that it wasn’t the same person.

My division was stationed in Normandy, France, at the time of the Allied invasion on June 6, 1944. Toward the end of August or early September, Canadian troops captured me near Dieppe.10 I was with a small group of men who were cut off from our main company and overrun by motorized Allied units. For several days we wandered around searching for our unit, until one night we strayed into a field camp of Canadian soldiers. You can well imagine the astonishment all around when we suddenly appeared in their midst. The Canadians didn’t have a guard posted. This was probably better for all because otherwise we might have exchanged gunfire. Instead, we peacefully turned over our weapons and in return received cigarettes.…

Fighting temptation describes a battle that is as much spiritual as it is emotional or physical. To be tempted is not a sin. Everyone is tempted and at different levels. Even Jesus was tempted! The crack of gunfire in the defining darkness drew him from his sleep. He silently awakened his raw-boned family. Sitting up and listening to the pandemonium which lay outside of the windowless skyscraper. The fire danced around creating demonic shadows upon the walls and across their gaunt faces. The man held his wife’s only hand as they rolled back to their sleep. The lemon soured light beamed throughout the city resting like a gargantuan beast, overpowering the horizon. The Dilapidated buildings, the burning city, a destroyed world. Once again he was first to rise.…

Thunder crackled in the night sky, lighting it with a brilliant flash of white, abruptly going back into darkness. An old man stares out the window, sighing, as he soaks in the ambient noise of the storm. It calms his nerves as he recalls a story, passed down the generations of his family. Horrid images flash through his mind as he slowly closes his eyes, running his hand over the aged skin of his face. This old man, he wasn’t there to experience the carnage, the curse of that grim night, even so, the story was so vivid in his mind.…

Five syllables. One word. A million sparks of energy surge through my body sending my every nerve into a hypnotic awe. It was as though you were falling in a dream and being kicked out of it.
