Guns On Campus

Because of the recent violent crimes going on college campuses, many pro-activists have suggested that teachers and students should be allowed to carry a concealed weapons permit on campus. Some claim that their rights have been violated because most college campus forbids the use of any firearm or weapon on campus. The right to carry a gun is not the problem here, but rather or not people would allow guns on college campuses. It is our right, as the Constitution states, to grant citizens the right to bear arms. Being from the South, I am no stranger to seeing guns from time-to-time, but it is not appropriate for guns to be in a powerless and defenseless place such as a college campus. In many states, once a gun permit has been issued, it is easier to get a concealed weapon permit. According to georgiapacking.com, a citizen does not have to obtain a permit to carry the weapon as long as they are not prohibited from owning a firearm, but they must have a Georgia Weapons Carry License that is issued under the code 16-11-129 in order to carry a concealed weapon. The Official Code of Georgia Annotated, the O.C.G.A., gives the person a right to carry their gun for a period of five years. This permit will only cost 30 dollars. There are a few exceptions to this rule such as: possession of a controlled substance, felony convictions, being under the age of 21, a fugitive, or anyone that has had their weapons license taken away, etc. Even though there are many restrictions, none of them mention the person’s mental capacity for someone that has been in the hospital for mental illnesses over five years leading up to the application. Arizona does not require a citizen to have a concealed weapons permit. In 2010, Arizona governor Jan Brewer signed a bill that repealed the state law that required people to carry concealed weapons permit, but there was a proposal that allowed teachers and students to carry concealed weapons permits. If college students are ever allowed to carry their guns on campuses, it is more than likely that crimes and violence would increase. To have student’s pursue an education is hard and stressful enough, but there are times when people are not in control of their emotions and anything can set them off. For example, if a student who possess a gun feels their instructor was unfair about their grade, they could possibly “take it out” on the instructor and the students.
