The first reason why guns should be allowed on college campuses is people have the right to self-defense. Practically all debates on gun control anywhere, have at some point come around to the Second Amendment of the U.S. Constitution which reads, “The right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed (Bijlefeld 5). Experts believe that the right to arms can mean the right to self-defense and indeed, for many, the difference between life and death (Bijlefeld 74). Amanda Collins, who in 2007 was raped on the campus of the University of Nevada, Reno; said that had if she had been carrying her licensed gun, she would have averted the attack (Schwarz). Also, on the Colorado State University sexual offenses dropped from 47 in 2002 to only two in 2008, which was right after it started allowing concealed-carry on campus (Burnett). Lastly, since most campuses are open to the public with few access restrictions, criminals are free to enter with illegal weapons (Zalneraitis).
