“We Real Cool: Stay in School”
It was a Wednesday on the final week of senior year and the only thing happening in my classes was the exchanging of yearbooks. I had already gotten signatures from all of my closest friends, except one who hadn’t been at school the past two days; his name was Frank Gerrity. He was a childhood friend who was always known for being a trouble maker, so it wasn’t unusual for him to ditch. After not having seen him in any of the classes we had together, I decided to pay him a visit after school, since he didn’t live very far. As I was approaching his house, I noticed a police car parked outside with someone sitting in the back. It was Frank and he had just been arrested for taking a joyride in a stolen car with some guys who were “cool,” very much like the characters in Gwendolyn Brook’s poem, “We Real

An example of this can be seen in lines such as “Lurk late” and “Strike straight.” This use of alliteration gives the poem an essence of sound, almost like a song, which gives much more emphasis to the idea that the speaker believes he is “cool” for the foul acts they commit. The line “Strike straight” suggests that the gang commits perfect crimes and is therefore proud of getting away with them. Assonance can also be seen in each stanza of the poem with words such as “sin/gin” and “June/soon.”
After painting a “cool” picture of the speaker’s actions through a rhythmic sound, Brooks goes on to illustrate the ultimate consequences that one must face for such a lifestyle. Though the musical aspect of the poem creates a somewhat cheerful vibe, the poem ends with the two words “Die soon.” Brooks is attempting to imply that those who choose to live a carefree life of crime, such as the pool players, over a life of education is sure to live a short

    The poem is written in first person, presenting only one character?s point of view. The title is ironic. "We Real Cool" (3) is contradicting the last line, "We Die soon." (10) Every detail in her work is deliberate. The italicized introduction "The Pool Players. Seven at the Golden Shovel" (1,2) evokes a figurative meaning. The number seven, for example, signifies luck as pool players; while golden implies perfection. However, shovel reminds the reader of death. ?Brooks reveals the ignorance of the players in their speech. When you read the title, you think it’s going to be about a group of people who are cool, but once you go through each line, you realized it’s the opposite.     Brooks uses symbolism to get the readers to view the poem in an abstract nature. In the subtitle, the word golden is symbolic of summer, youth and daytime. This is an ironic name for the pool hall, because the wandering lives of the pool players seem anything but golden. By saying that the seven “Lurk late,” the poem suggests that they are sneaking around at night, which points to the likelihood that they are involved in criminal activities (line 3). Brooks uses the word we eight different times in the poem and this symbolizes “the unification of a particular group and their representation of a broader social phenomenon” (Koch 27). The continual use of we presents the seven as a group and not as individuals, which could also represent a sense of peer pressure. In the last line of the poem Brooks expresses the result of this lifestyle “We Die soon” (lines 7-8). Brooks uses the word soon to create a symbolic suspension “she enacts a sense of suspension, employing the word “soon” to suggest that the young men, for the moment, still exist” (Koch 27).
