In 1950 Gwinnett county had a total population of just over 32,000 people. Over the last 60 years, we have seen exponential growth with a population of more than 800,000 people. For years Gwinnett has held the title as the county with the highest ranking school system in the state. Also many multi-national corporations such as NCR, Cadillac Jack, WIKA and many more have decided to headquarter their businesses right here in Gwinnett. With this spike in growth, the people of Gwinnett have seen a changing population structure, and a wide variety of cultural makeup.

Though Gwinnett is only a few short miles for Lake Lanier and houses many beautiful nature parks such as Little Mulberry park in Hamilton Mill. Many demolitions have occurred to provide better access to roads, and highways. These environmental changes have brought about huge impact to the people of Gwinnett. Many of the buildings were on land that were owned by individuals and had been forced out due to the need for growth. For Example, the land CoolRay Field was built on had a few homes that had to be vacated to build. According to a recent study by Gwinnett County government the population is anticipated to hit 900,000 people in 2020. With the current numbers already scratching the surface of that number, I would say the growth is going to continue and more families will be displaced.
No doubt, Gwinnett is one of the fastest growing communities in metro Atlanta, and has been since 1950. Having grown up here, I have witnessed firsthand the growth this community has seen. Much of the data that I wrote into this paper didn’t really surprise me as much as it reinforced my perception of the diversity and growth in Gwinnett County. Based on the recent 2010 census, it doesn’t appear that much is changing in regards to population.
