Date of Study (year only): 1958 Hypothesis: What does the psychologist believe the study will discover?
Harlow believes he will discover that infants have a basic need for close contact and must have something (such as a cloth or other cozy object) to soothe themselves in addition to the basic biological needs such as food and water.
Variables: What factors are being studied, tested, and/or measured? Monkey behaviors were studied and tested for their choice of either comfort contact or biological need (food).

Harlow concluded that ‘contact comfort’ (which was provided by the softness of the cloth covering on the cloth mother) was more important than feeding in the formation of an infant monkey’s attachment to its mother. Significance of the study to the understanding of psychology: Psychology is defined as the scientific study of behavior and mental processes; how did this study contribute to the understanding of either human behavior and/or thinking at the time it was conducted?
The study shows how important contact comfort is and how it may have a significant impact on how one interacts and develops relationships in the future. The results debunked the belief that biological need is of greater importance during development than that of comfort and physical contact. Criticisms: Include at least two criticisms of how the study was conducted or how the results are/were interpreted; you should criticize the study regardless of whether or not there are criticisms present in the reading. 1. Love cannot just be about contact. It also includes communication and trust along with other things. If the cloth mother has no way of communicating with the monkey's, how can their relationship be considered
