Habits of Mind Humanities Project The Habits of the Mind are methods, in which one can deal with stressors in a beneficial way. Many leaders and heroes/heroines use these habits in their everyday life. Marcus Brutus (a character from Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar) and Thomas Jefferson are two leaders who use the three Habits of Mind, Listening and Understanding with Empathy, Managing Impulsivity, and Thinking Interpedently.
In Julius Caesar, Brutus exemplifies the perfect leader role by listening and understanding Cassius with empathy. In Act one scene two , lines ninety-eight through one-hundred and thirty-nine .It shows Brutus listening carefully to Cassius and taking into considering Cassius’s plan to kill Caesar. It is important to listen carefully to all idea propositioned to you. Take Thomas Jefferson for an example, he had to listen to 54 other delegates ideas and opinions in regards to writing the Declaration of Independence. In addition to getting his own opinion across in a respectful manner. Being able to take a step back and listen is an important trait to have if you want to be a leader or even successful in life. Brutus did just that in Act one Scene two with managing impulsivity ,where all the other conspirators are trying to bring too many aspect of killing Caesar into the equation. For example when Cassius suggest they kill Antony also, Brutus looks into reason and sees it would make their plan too bloody! In history, Thomas Jefferson’s profession as the 3rd president of the U.S.A enforced that he would have to take his time when making decisions to ensure that all outcomes are how he wanted them to turn out. Undoubtedly, every person can go out and do but for one to be able to think before doing shows they are gifted and
