Chapter One: Introduction
Animal welfare has received more legislative attention in the European Union (EU) than in many other regions of the world. Take animal welfare standards for poultry for example, since January 1, 2012, the UK has banned the use of caged chickens, which is a good news to animal welfare protection, but the bad news is that the price of eggs on the EU wholesale market has nearly quadrupled as food manufacturers are struggling to find approved eggs . Daily life of common people would inevitably be influenced while protecting the welfare of animals, and trade in table eggs would continue to be limited to the local region.
As a sub-topic of an investigation about people’s understanding of animals, the purpose of this research is to study people’s attitude towards the protection of animal welfare, and their understanding of the current situation of animal welfare protection in U.K. Owing to time limit, only questionnaire survey of 60 local people in Norwich, U.K. and follow-up interviews are employed during the investigation, which might limit the reliability of the data collected. However, it might be a good sip to see the relationship between man and animals in U.K.

Chapter Three: Methods
A questionnaire survey about people’s understanding of animals were carried out in Norwich, which consisted1 of 4 aspects including people’s understanding of animal welfare, animal testing, pets, and animal organizations. As part of the research, this article mainly focuses on people’s understanding of animal welfare by asking people whether they think animals should share equal rights with human beings, whether they prefer to spend more for better living conditions for animals and whether they are satisfied with the current situation of animal welfare. 60 valid questionnaires were collected from respondents including 36 women and 24 men of different ages and employment status. Follow-up interviews among over 10 people were also carried out especially on how people view the influence of animal welfare on human beings.

3.1.1 People’s understanding of animal rights
For thousands of years, animals have been treated to satisfy many needs that humans have. Meanwhile, the topic of animal rights has also been discussed, even debated. In this research, when asked whether animals should share equal rights, though 25% of the respondents gave negative response, 45% of the respondents agree or totally agree. Another 30% have no clear idea about the issue. (See Figure 1)
…………………………in the issue was doubted. Someone believes that intelligent animals like apes, elephants should share equal rights. Someone would care more about the rights of pets in family. In general, they hold it is unrealistic to talk about the equal rights in current world.
3.1.2 People’s willingness to contribute to animal welfare

Whenever animal welfare discussed, there would be compromises of humans in different fields. In this questionnaire survey, when asked whether they are willing to spend more for good living conditions for animal, 63% of the respondents agree or strongly agree, which is really a piece of good news to the protection of animal welfare (See Figure 2).
Among these 60 respondents, compared with women, men are little bit more willingly to spend more for the welfare of animals (See Figure 3). Many women prefer to spend more for humans who are in need of help. Just like Clarine, a school teacher in Norwich, said: “there are lots of children in African who are in starvation, and it might be more urgent to help our kids ……………….
3.1.3 People’s awareness of current situation of animal welfare

The topic of animal welfare has come into being for centuries, and EU plays a leader role in protecting animal welfare. However, when asked whether they are satisfied with current situation of animal welfare protection, 67% of the respondents expressed their disagreement(See Figure 5). They don’t think human have done enough for animal welfare.
At this point, men and women express different voices. There are more women who don’t think people have done enough for the welfare of animals (See Figure 6). For this difference, it might be because of the standard of “enough”. Just like a young lady questioned during the interview, “what is enough? Yes, we have done something, but not enough.”
3.1.4 Summary
As this research demonstrates, though there are different opinions among people of different genders and financial situations, most of the respondents do care and ………………………………..
