Haiti Personal Statement
I am currently a senior Political Science major, History minor, with a concentration in International Relations. I am also the chairman of the Howard University NAACP Political Action Committee. I am an academic, I am a student leader, but more importantly, I am a servant. It is my firm belief that the reason I was blessed to be given the opportunity to get a college education is so that I can use this privilege and knowledge to help others. Just recently in December I was fortunate enough to go on a service trip to South Africa with the YAALI program. There we did community service and connected with our brothers and sisters on the continent. This was a very impressionable experience for me, especially because it was my first time leaving …show more content…
How has this policy and others like this contributed to the underdevelopment of Haiti? I also want to study how Haiti can maximize and develop their human resources in order to improve the quality of life. Lastly, how has mismanagement and lack of resources in Haiti contributed to the ecologically hazardous environment, such as the large scale of deforestation on the hillsides of Haiti. I am interested in how all of these different issues are interconnect and contribute to Haiti being the poorest country in the western hemisphere and what solutions can be developed. I would like to gain more insight on the question of what is being done and what can be done to stimulate economic growth and political stability in Haiti? I am interested in which nations, preferably black nations, could possibly align themselves with Haiti for aid with political and economic development, not merely humanitarian and disaster aid. Before any of these questions can be answered it is necessary to connect with the Haitian people on a human level first, which is why I am eager to serve in ASB Haiti at any

In the article Sometimes, The Earth is Cruel by Leonard Pitts, the author discusses how distressing it is to be Haitian. In nearly the past twenty two years, Haiti has suffered from multiple natural catastrophes. Haiti struggles with hurricanes, tropical storms, political instability, and most recently, a consequential earthquake. In his article, Pitts discusses how humans are able to return to stability after these occurrences, which is not the case for Haiti. Leonard Pitts recognizes that it always seems to be “Haiti’s turn.” The main predicament Pitts recognizes is that Haiti always seems to be the country next in line for natural catastrophes.…

Prior to college, I was very vaguely interested in politics. However, my senior year of high school a classmate asked me about my opinion on Trayvon Martin; unfortunately, I had no clue who Trayvon Martin was and simply answered with, “who?” That day was a turning point for me because I chose to research Trayvon Martin and George Zimmerman, which drastically altered my world perspective. I learned about systematic racism, feminist issues, and other systems of oppression. I delved deep into the history of colonialism and learned that many of our current issues, such as poverty and income inequality, are a direct result of European colonialism and the underdevelopment of non-white societies and communities. At 18 years old, I decided that I wanted…

Haiti was born out of struggle beginning in 1791 and lasting beyond 1804. The fight was never an easy one and even after independence, Haiti had many negative factors hindering progression. Haiti's progress was hindered mainly as she was ostracised by the international community. Due to the fact that Haiti was almost entirely cut off from the rest of the world, it was difficult for the country to repay the huge foreign debt in return for independence. The leaders that ruled Haiti after 1804, made decisions that proved to disrupt the growth of the country increasing the rate of corruption. After being monitored closely for a period of time the US invaded Haiti on July 28, 1915 for reasons which including keeping European powers out of the Caribbean, ensuring Germany doesn’t make its influence in the Caribbean through Haiti permanent and political power would give the US lucrative trade power.…

Another situation that I was made aware of was that families needed food and it surprised me to realize that there were kids in need of food that lived near me. I come from a fairly wealthy town and had not realized that there were so many families that lived near me in need of food. I cannot imagine being a young child and have to worry if my mom or dad was going to be able feed me dinner. This experience made me realize how important it is to donate to the local food pantry. Citizenship will be very important in my career because if you want to get good publicity for a business it is important to help the community. Citizenship will be even more important to me as a person because volunteering has a way of making me feel like I am helping making a positive change. When I get into my career I plan to donate to food pantries often because this experience made me realize that not all people have the means to support themselves. I actually plan to start volunteer at the food pantry in the summer because they seemed like they could use some help and the volunteers were very gracious that I was helping them out. I learned through this project that not…

When I first heard of this opportunity, I became very ecstatic. As an avid New York Times reader, the opportunity to work with the paper itself was exciting. I love to write and find myself always writing on my blog or my journal, expressing my story and my voice. I want to express my unique voice as Laissa Alexis, the uniqueness of the experiences I have been through. My life as a Haitian immigrant, living in New Jersey and going to an all-girls Catholic school in an urban area. I would be able to express a narrative that is not often heard. I view the world in different lenses and I would love to share with the…

This summer, I was blessed with an amazing experience. I had the opportunity to travel to Haiti on a mission trip. Of course, I was slightly nervous about traveling to a third world country, where I did not know the language, and the only people I would know would be the people from the church that I was traveling with. However, I knew this would be a life changing experience, so I took the leap! I am so grateful I did because every second was worth it! Our mission was to work with orphans, help homeschool English speaking children, and meet with the women’s group of Grand Savann Christian Church.…

    Adaptation In Haiti

After spending ten days in Haiti, I came to realize how spoiled and easy life is for me. Seeing the Haitian people’s daily work and living conditions really has had an impact on how I view various situations. Adaptation is a part of human nature. People in the United States have adapted to various diseases and their way of life, just like the people of Haiti adapt to different diseases and their ways of life. Disease and poverty still control Haiti and those who live in it, unlike those of us living in the U.S. The country has received millions of dollars in aid since the earthquake in 2010, but how much longer until they can support themselves?…

Spelman College’s motto, A Choice to Change the World, mirrors my goal as a member of this intellectual community. During my first year at this institution, I dedicated myself to several hours of community service. I found that this was a vital part of my intellectual growth as both a student and person within society. This year I volunteered for several nonprofit organizations, however I dedicated most of my time to the Atlanta Community Food Bank. Before volunteering for this organization I was not quite sure how I would be able to make a significant difference in my community. However, when I volunteered for this organization, I was able to tremendously help people in Atlanta. Likewise, this experience opened my eyes to the increasing…

When I was finally a senior I decided to change my ministry to help with a local version of Habitat for Humanity. I found out that a local Boy Scout troop would let me help them repair houses even though I was not a Boy Scout. They welcomed me with open arms and we got to work right away. We completely remodeled the house and the old man was so happy. We brought back his human dignity by raising his standard of living. Human dignity is something that everybody deserves but not everybody gets, but in this case the man regained his human dignity and he was so happy that it made all of my hard work worth it. This semester I was taught all about human dignity and now I have seen both effects of it, a man without human dignity and at the end a man with human dignity and it is an unbelievable change. I am so glad that I got to help this troop this semester.…

I have been a hardworking student here at Elsik High School. I’ve spent my first three years doing my best to excel within the ranks of my class and to get a good GPA. Now that I’ve achieved that and know that my academic achievements are fulfilled, I have decided to get involved with the school and help around the community. Whenever I go to places, I always tell myself that I should help around the community to help the poor and needy and help the environment. I have always wanted the world to change for the better, and little by little, I know we can. I’m participating in a beach clean-up volunteer service with a friend next Saturday to help the environment. Ever since I have signed up for that, I have felt good about myself and I knew that I have much more potential to do good around the neighborhood.…

In order to make the world a better place to live in, instead of thinking big like most of us feel the need to (living in poverty ridden lands to feed the hungry, building homeless shelters, ect.), in college, I feel that I am going to start small in a sense though not excluding the possibility of doing something extensive in later years. The way I want to make at least where I live a better place is through helping people in need, by being a light in a dark world. Though I have not been to college yet, from what I have heard it seems pretty corrupt and perverse, from getting the amount of freedom we do all at once. If I can, I want to be there for anybody who will listen, to help save themselves in the long run, or at least in their college life, to make better choices.…

In September of 2012 I decided to go to Haiti on an upcoming mission trip. People have asked me what made me want to go and to this day I’m still not exactly sure why I went, I just knew I had to go. It was a typical Sunday church service for my friends and I. We were sitting together, some on their phones and some, like me, were just starring into blank space waiting for the service to end. Towards the end of the service a church leader usually gets on stage to talk about upcoming events. This time they just so happened to be talking about information meetings for upcoming mission trips. They got my attention when they proceeded to talk about Haiti and show pictures from past trips. Have you ever had one of those moments where you just knew something was right? That’s how I decided to go on this trip, I just knew I was going. Little did I realize the impact this “feel right” decision would make on my life.…

Coming from a very humble economic background, I constantly faced challenges since a very early age. This triggered in me a sense of responsibility towards people, who are underprivileged, to enable them access to education. On a smaller level, I started training my college juniors regarding Mobile App development, after becoming a part of Microsoft Student Partner. After setting foot in corporate world myself, I dedicated my off-hours towards teaching & spending quality time with students & orphans from various NGOs. It has been my constant passion to help others get equal opportunity and chance to lead a better…
