“Children of the sea” is one chapter of many with the theme of a false hope. False hope is used as a “weapon” against the oppressed people of Haiti. When the people heard the old president was coming back, the people gained a sense of hope and went to the airport in order to see if it was true. The female protagonist of this chapter writes in a letter to the male protagonist “There is a rumor that the old president is coming back” (page 16) and shows the false hope of the people when she later writes “Of course the old president didn’t come. They arrested a lot of people at the airport, shot a whole bunch…

The first story "Children of the Sea" is between two people in love: a young man on a rickety boat fleeing Haiti because the Macoutes are taking over the country. The other character is a girl who loves the boy on the boat, and she writes letters to him. Meanwhile he's writing a journal to keep track of happenings on the boat that he plans on giving to her when they meet again. In this story the relationship between Celianne and her newborn child was in my eyes one of the most heartbreaking in the whole book. "Many people have volunteered to throw Celianne's baby overboard for her. She will not let them. They are waiting for her to go to sleep so they can do it, but she will not sleep. I never knew before that dead children looked purple"(Danticat, 25). Later the…

The turn of the 19th century was a period of revolutions that brought about drastic impacts and changes to many Western nations. The driving force for the majority of the revolutions during this time was the pursuit of freedom, a universal right that all people are guaranteed equality and liberty. When it is threatened, an uprising of the masses becomes evitable to ensure protection of such freedom. The French Revolution and the Haitian Revolution were two key examples that resulted from the concept of freedom. The French Revolution and the Haitian Revolution overlapped, and the challenges in France against the old order created a wave of rebellion in Saint Domingue. This paper will compare and contrast the similarities and differences of the revolution through the different lenses: the precursor and causes, ideas and philosophies, roles of violence, social, political, and economic changes, impacts of wars, and great power politics.…

Haiti has dealt with ongoing environmental issues prior to the 2010 disaster. Deforestation (beginning in the 1950s) caused soil erosion and threatened clean water sources (Fritz, Hillaire, Molière, Wei, & Mohammed, 2012). Several theories suggest that extreme deforestation and soil erosion could have possibly contributed to the vertical slippage of plates due to the increased water weight on the plates (Ader, 2011) (Wdowinski, Tsukanov, Hong, & Amelung, 2010). Coincidentally, prior to the earthquake, Haiti experienced two tropical storms and a major hurricane in 2010; which may corroborate geologists’ assertion that increased soil erosion from these extreme weather events may have triggered the 2010 earthquake in Haiti (Ader, 2011) (Wdowinski, Tsukanov, Hong, & Amelung, 2010).…

In September of 2012 I decided to go to Haiti on an upcoming mission trip. People have asked me what made me want to go and to this day I’m still not exactly sure why I went, I just knew I had to go. It was a typical Sunday church service for my friends and I. We were sitting together, some on their phones and some, like me, were just starring into blank space waiting for the service to end. Towards the end of the service a church leader usually gets on stage to talk about upcoming events. This time they just so happened to be talking about information meetings for upcoming mission trips. They got my attention when they proceeded to talk about Haiti and show pictures from past trips. Have you ever had one of those moments where you just knew something was right? That’s how I decided to go on this trip, I just knew I was going. Little did I realize the impact this “feel right” decision would make on my life.…
