What did you learn about law firms that you hadn't known before you read the case? I had worked in a electronic firm for four years. Between the law firm and electronic firm, there are some different policies - hierarchies, professional field, and cross-functional team. hierarchies - In this case, Hale and Dorr law company has three different hierarchies - Senior Partners, Junior Partners and first year Associates. My ex-company, however, has 14 hierarchies from operators to the chairman of the board of directors. professional field - In law firm everyone focuses on different professional field. So, there is no doubt everyone can do their work independently and face their clients directly. On the other hand, in electronic firm our CEO gives goals or customer requirements to each department supervisor. Therefore, they can assign different tasks to different expertise of staff. All the staff together achieves business goals. cross-functional team - An attorney have the ability to complete his/her work. He/she does not need to work with others unless their case touched the other areas. But, our CEO believes that employees will have a different interaction if they are from different departments. He sets up many different teams for products, manufacturing, quality, and material…etc such as High Density Interconnect (HDI), Defect Reduce Team (DRT), and Material Review Board (MRB)…etc. Team members are made up of two people from each department. Thus, all of them can communicate with different members of every department, and they can express their professional thought and concern, and work together efficiently. Because of new organizational teams, our company solves problems more efficient, and gains much more profits.
Before I read this article, I think attorneys are always sitting in the office and waiting for customers' arrival. They only talk with their clients
