Hall of Justice
A visitation to the Hall of Justice on 850 Bryant Street is usually does not have a positive connotation, unless of course you work there. The Hall of Justice currently serves as the San
Francisco Police Department operational headquarters. The complex serves as the main San
Francisco County Jail and is the base of operations for the San Francisco Sheriff’s Department.
In addition it is also the criminal justice center for the San Francisco County Superior Court,
Office of the San Francisco Chief Medical Examiner and city morgue. (Justice, 2014)
As a first timer at the Hall of Justice Court House my expectations were to be something like on television or movies

As I walked out of the court room, it lead me to a question that was how long does this process take? It is barely their preliminary hearing and the crime was committed almost 8 months ago.
Our final stop was the Probation Department building located just a few block from the
Hall of Justice. We go to talk to Probation Officer, Armando Martinez and got a tour around the new building. Officer Martinez gave us a quick description of the programs they do to help felon and how to stay on the right path. Being in prison for any amount of time is difficult and having to start your life again after is even tougher. At this location they help felons find a job, finish school, receive food, and other types of help.

Many people believe that by putting people in prisons, completing their sentence, they are able to be in the real world perfectly fine, but fact of the matter is, it is not that easy, which leads me to the flaws in the Criminal Justice system that I noticed after visiting the court house.
Throughout my visitation and after hearing guest speakers, Yali (Public Defender) and Armando
Martinez (Probation Officer) there was several flaws I noticed such

For example, in Oakland there is so many people they handle them in groups. Is this correct?
• Is it unfair for non-native speakers to have to wait longer for their trial because they cannot speak the language? How can race and language affect your trial? Is it systematically fair?
• Why was there 3 Public Defenders in the case but only 1 District Attorney? Why not 3 as well?
• Why doesn’t every felon get a probation program that will help them in remaking their lives?
There is many flaws that I believe the Criminal Justice system needs to fix in order to make it work properly. People are also not fully aware on how the system works or cases are managed.
Unawareness leads to confusion which can may things can affect individuals in trials.
Reformation of the Criminal Justice system needs to happen. As a whole we need to start focusing more on where the problem is being created. Although San Francisco has stepped up and started creating programs such as Community Court, there is yet many places that are not doing anything to fix the system but instead just making the problem escalade. It is how one judge once said, “Fairness has departed from the system.”

On October 8th we visited Fresno County Jail. Fresno County Jail is ran by the Fresno County Sheriffs Office. According to the visitation there is not one specific watch commander, there are several different individuals that are watch commander which is dependent on the shift. The head of the agency or director is Sheriff Margaret Mims. The inmates at this particular institution are supervised by approximately 350 individuals ranging from correctional officers, sergeants, and lieutenants. As defined by Fresno county it is the Correctional Sergeants duty to act as a lead supervisor for one or more functional work areas. Correctional Sergeants then report to Correctional Lieutenants who serve as a watch commander for an assigned work shift. Correctional Lieutenants are also the first management level classification within the correctional officer classification series. This particular jail is used to detain individuals awaiting court appearance, and to house convicted inmates sentenced to serve terms in the local jail. As I am writing this paper the current population is 2,639 where only 231 of those are female inmates. There are currently 959 sentenced inmates in the jail, and 1680 are considered to be “pretrial”.…

The most common form of criminal sentencing in the United States these days is probation. Conditions of probation and parole are primary factors that have an effect on a probationers post lock-up life. When determining conditions of probation and parole, the offender’s background plays a very vital role in the determination. A probation or parole officer has four functions that helps them figure out if probation and/or parole will be effective for each offender. “Supervision of sentenced probationers or released parolees is the most active stage of the probation/parole process” (Schmalleger, 2014). Applying these four functions to the situation of the Coatesville Fire Department in Coatesville, PA is no different.…

The American prison system was set up to rehabilitate prisoners so they can meld back into society as productive citizens. Instead, factors as high crime rate and of course, mandatory sentences have caused an increased over-crowding of our jails. This has also caused and increased budget deficit. Where is the rehabilitation that once was used, it has all but disappeared in the prison system today.…

After getting the opportunity to go to a jail, see how my expectations are extremely outlandish and correct my expectation to be more rational and genuine. This experience has impacted me because it made me come to the realization that although the prison system does have its flaws and problems, it it not as bad as the media has made it seemed. Before I went on the tour, I could never imagine myself working in anything related to the prison system, and as a student studying to become a clerk, lawyer, and judge (respectively), it would be impractical to think that I would never get involved in the prison system, especially with my clients. This experience helped me conquer the fear that was keeping me back from what I wanted to major in: criminal law. I am very fortunate that this class gave me the opportunity to enter the world of corrections, in an educational and interesting…

Many criminals are sent to jail on a day to day basis. Once they have completed their sentence they are faced with many problems once they are “free”. These problems can be but are not limited to housing, employment, and substance abuse. The prisoner, once they are released, has a tendency to go back to their old ways and to continue the life of crime they were a part of prior to prison. To avoid this, while a prisoner is in prison, the staff creates a reentry program for the prisoner. The reentry program takes affect once the prisoner leaves prison. These programs are created within the community to help the offender from committing new crimes and to integrate them back into society. These programs are also created to help with recidivism. Recidivism is the re-arrest, re-conviction, or re-incarceration of an offender after leaving prison. To reduce this high rate of recidivism, many communities are establishing reentry programs to assist former prisoners seeking employment, housing, and coping with alcohol and substance abuse addictions and other mental health issues.…

Caught up in my fantastical, idyllic court world, I had very high expectations of how my first court experience would unfold. I dressed up for the occasion, wearing a business casual outfit with heels. As soon as I walked into the Municipal Court of Atlanta on Garnett Street, I was suddenly shocked back to the real world as eyes of sweat panting wearing, baggy panted individuals stared at me as if I was wearing my birthday suit. My glamorous perceptions were instantly retracted, as I walked through the security line, and saw halls of people waiting for their turn to hear their lawful fate. Not understanding my court etiquette, I asked an employee what my boundaries were as a simple observer, and his answer was, “Just have at it, miss.” With no shame, I entered the elevator and with purpose chose the third floor. The lackadaisical surroundings were something I was not expecting, as I sat down in the back corner of courtroom 3C without anyone asking what my intentions were.…

The first thing they need to do is develop a plan. Ex-prisoners come home and have lots of goals and hopes that they believe they can fulfill. They may want to start the business that they always dreamed of. They may remember the times when they wanted to graduate from school. Maybe they want to reconnect with their family and friends. Often times the prison setting generates a sense of urgency in those people. Short term goals are often better to begin with as long term goals may be more difficult to accomplish and may end in frustration. If they feel the need to get help achieving these goals there are many programs out there to assist them. There is mentoring programs, colleges, business development programs and other non-profit organizations (Community Based Corrections).…

By providing housing to the people the Justice center the offender can become educated in making the right and informative decision.
