By the 1920s and 1930s, Halloween had become a secular, but community-centered holiday, with parades and town-wide parties as the featured entertainment. Despite the best efforts of many schools and communities, vandalism began to plague Halloween celebrations in many communities during this time. By the 1950s, town leaders had successfully limited vandalism and Halloween had evolved into a holiday directed mainly at the young. Due to the high numbers of young children during the fifties baby boom, parties moved from town civic centers into the classroom or home, where they could be more easily accommodated. Between 1920 and 1950, the centuries-old practice of trick-or-treating was also revived. Trick-or-treating was a relatively inexpensive way for an entire community to share the Halloween celebration. In theory, families could also prevent tricks being played on them by providing the neighborhood children with small treats. A new American tradition was born, and it has continued to grow. Today, Americans spend an estimated $6 billion annually on Halloween, making it the country’s second largest commercial…

With the children becoming more involved with the holiday, the costumes and masks became more child friendly. Parents would create their child’s costumes out of household items and fabric pieces to create the ultimate outfit. As the holiday became more successful, it also became more profitable. Many stores sold “decorations, costumes, masks, candy, and cards” (Bannatyne, 2004) Halloween was becoming such a big event that many decorated their houses, and “towns and cities began hosting large community celebrations;” along with the celebrations, trick-or-treating became very popular (Bannatyne,…

    * If you have very young children, try making scary decorations with them to hang all over the house. Make costumes together, paint their faces, bake pumpkin-shaped cookies, and invite friends and family over to play traditional games such as apple bobbing and story-telling. Carve out a pumpkin, and place it in the window to attract trick-or-treaters and get the children used to the idea of people coming to the house. Always make sure you answer the door with them, and have a bag of sweets or treats ready, (buying individually wrapped sweets is more hygienic, and gives parents more confidence in their safety).…

Have you ever wondered why we celebrate Halloween? Though it’s a child-oriented holiday, the origins are much darker than you’d expect. On a late afternoon in October in 1987, in a world where Halloween didn’t exist, as dusk was approaching, a group of four seventeen-year olds named Xavier, Eve, Antonio and Asuna were walking along the streets of Pickering, Ontario. They were originally supposed to spend their Saturday finishing a project, but they got distracted and headed out and said they would do it later. They became bored and were looking for some adventure.…
